Check out the thread "Is the Push shot foul pretty new?" Great footage of both men in their prime. I've never seen it before. Definitely worth forty minutes of your time.

At the end it's mentioned Caras won $3500 for the match. That's the equivalent of $27k today!

Anyone have info on the table? Looks like a Gold Crown but it looks like it has real wide trim around the rails. A prototype maybe?

1963 Chicago.... The play by play announcer is Leroy Kinman a three time ACU-1 college 14.1 Champion, 1949-51. (The only player that ever won it three times). Leroy was a very dear friend to Willie & Jimmy which they both insisted that Leroy get the job of calling the match.... Leroy is in his upper 80's doing well and still living in Arlington, Texas. Going to visit him next week, he always has great stories to tell.

Raymond Linares and Lars Vardaman both won the ACUI title three times, in addition to Kinman, though the game was 9-ball rather than 14.1.

I played in straight pool tournaments in those days and never could understand why the ref had to call all the balls for you and sometimes he actually sharked you. To slow them down I would sometimes get down on a ball and he would call it then I would change my shot to another ball.

In this video he even called a four ball combination for Caras. Ball and pocket is all that is needed.
P.S I gambled nine ball with Jimmy in the sixties and played an exhibition match with Willie..

Back in the 60's there were many matches played on tv. Specially with Wide World of Sports. With the referee calling & pointing to each ball during the match was designed for the tv audience. Specially the non knowledgeable of pool.

PS: If it was done during non tv matches, I would say it might of been a carry over from England. Maybe a old time tradition.

1) Jimmy plays pretty fast

2) So Willie used to sit with the audience when he was losing? LOL
