Movie "Turn The River" release date in May

Let me add one more example on this point.

I am now working on a story that is basicly about a black guy and white guy of specific age and type. They both need to be professional actors and have strong improvisional skills AND be very good pool players. I don't yet know if it will be a play or a film.

We cannot teach anyone to play pool or to be a better player during rehersals since there is not enough time. They must be able to run a table of 15 balls from the stars of the project.

Also there is way too much acting craft stuff that a non actor needs to know in many areas of rehearsal and improv that can't be taught to a non actor in the moment.

This is sort of why the different requirement must be there. It's easy to think people who live a type of sports life can act it in a movie.
It usually is not the case. Thats also why they're mostly used as advisors.

Ok, the wife and I are going to see this Saturday evening at the Somerville Theatre in Boston as part of the IFF Boston. We preordered tickets online through the website and will be going to the Saturday evening(7:45pm) showing. I'll review it here Sunday to let you all know what I think :D
Here are a couple of reviews from the Wisconsin Film Festival:

Anyone who is in the Boston area should check it out if you can, I could think of worse ways to spend a Saturday night.

I thought so too Johnny. I was just browsing the website and I found this little tidbit:

"TURN THE RIVER directed by Chris Eigeman and starring Famke Janssen
7:45pm Somerville Theatre
Director Chris Eigeman and star Famke Janssen in attendance."

How cool is that!! I can't wait.

George<----err....maybe I should leave the wife at home  :D

I also look forward to seeing this.

When I researched this when the original post was made,
it seemed like I would have had to pay $160+ to see the movie at the film festival in Boston.

Hopefully some posters will post a review, and it will be a good one, but I'm the type who will go to see it either way.

Looking forward to it!

Famke has a nice bridge! I like her already. I can't help but think about Whoopi Goldberg trying to play a pool hustler. She was totally inept! Just ask Jerry Breisath about that. He was her coach. :)

Jay, do you live near Los Angeles? It is opening tonight at 7:30 p.m., your time. It is free. I sure do wish you could check it out for us, if you don't have previous plans. It's a free viewing, too! :)

Low expectations

I don't have very high expectations for the movie. I bought it at $2.00 a share on the Hollywood stock exchange and have taken a bath on it.

Even at $2.00 a share, it is clear there isn't very high expectations for the movie. To give you perspective, most mainstream movies at release are somewhere between the $10 and $30 a share.

I am not sure where this movie will be playing. From what I understand, the above-referenced links were where it was previewing to audiences.

I would like to see it when it hits the movies. :)

Has anybody seen this movie yet?

Yes, I saw it. Overall it was a very cool experience. The director, Chris Eigeman, came out before it played and introduced it. He gave some very quick info like the budget($500,000) which is nothing compared to the average hollywood movie budgets.

The film itself was good IMHO. I don't want to give much away because it is well worth watching. Famke was great, Rip Torn was ok but I kept getting "Dodgeball" flashbacks. His character was very similar to Rod Steigers character in PHJ. The story revolves around Famke and her desire to be part of her sons life.
There are only 1 or 2 card playing scenes, very minimal. Almost all the action surrounds pool. There's quite a bit of One Pocket action as well as some 8ball and some 9ball. Most of the shots were of the flashy variety designed to entertain the audience but I don't think they over did it.
I liked AZ poster John Jubac's(VKJ) character, Deacon. Most of the pool playing revolves around him and Famke matching up. He's the biggest gambler in town and Famke needs a lot of money quick. You get the picture. I also liked Tony Robles in his small role, I would have liked to see more of him in this.
Overall you have to keep in mind that this is a low budget indie film. That being said I believe it to be better than previous pool based movies like "Pool Hall Junkies" and "Shooting Gallery". For all pool fans it is a MUST see.

After the movie was probably the coolest part of the experience. Both Chris Eigeman and star Famke Janssen came out, sat down on the edge of the stage and had a Q&A session with the audience that lasted a good 45 minutes. They talked about most all aspects of the production and apparantly Famke made mostly all of her own shots and suprisingly made mostly all of them on the 1st take. There is going to be a section on the DVD when it comes out that shows all the behind the scenes stuff. Should be pretty cool.

I hope this little review helps. :D

George

EDIT: Famke is even prettier in person than on film.....I'm sure JJ could attest to that  :p ;) :D

That was a great review, George! :)

Wow, Tony Robles is in it? That is neat!

Did they have a technical director, like Sigel and Mosconi were in the other pool movies? I wonder if Tony filled those shoes.

The actress was in "Rounders," and she seemed very believable.

I think this movie will be better than "Pool Hall Junkies." I can't wait to see it now! :p

I thought at first that Tony was the pool consultant but that question was asked during the Q&A session and surprisingly he wasn't. John Jubac was the pool consultant for the movie and I think he did a good job.
Go see it when it comes out, I think you'll like it.:D
