If you click on private messages on the right and then in the middle of the page towards the top but below the color coded empty folder chart, there is a box that says Inbox (the # of msgs u have here). Click on the arrow and go to sent items. This will show you all the msgs you've sent. If you're not sure if something went through or not, check there.

Tracy, that's the longest thread I know of also. Someone else could answer for sure but I think this site started up in the late 90's.... 98 or 99 maybe??

Here's another long winded one,

I think the site goes back further than '98. I remeber having the TV Minder a long time ago, before I ever discovered the forum.

Ok,

the question was:

Does playing straight pool improve my 9-Ball game ? My answer was yes....

First of all I think 9-Ball is a very complex game. It combines all kinds of elements, like the break, agressive run-outs, multiple choice shots, safeties, banks, kicks, jumps, position play in a short range, wide range, difficult shots, cut shots and so on.....

When straight pool played right you mostly have to play very short precise postions, like little stun-shots, soft follows and draws, tricky cuts in the side, controlled cluster break ups etc. So, it will improve the position play in a small range. Plus after years and years of practice you will be able to recognize situations and solutions faster.

In 9-Ball you are forced to move the cueball from one end of the table to the other, you are forced to play all kinds of shots.

Every seperately practised part of the game (drill or exercise) will help to improve your overall game.

So guys, take a few minutes (hours) a day besides playing the game and do drills ! It's worth it !
...and play straight pool too :D

Thorsten

Welcome to the board Mr. Hohman , congratulations on your showing in the World 14.1 Championships and thank you very much for posting.

I try to play one hour of straight pool when I have a practice session. I do practice the break on a couple of racks but mostly set up a break shot and go from there. As you point out it forces me to use a controlled short stroke instead of the "wing ding" long stroke typically used in 9 ball.
In addition, I seem to focus more when playing straight pool.

ruk

PS
I hope that some of the infantile posts in this thread does not dissuade you from posting. I look forward to your input and your expertise.

Heh heh...

I like the cut of your jib...

Not only does Mr. H. have a sense of humour, he also takes the time to reply (sensibly) to AZ posts.

Long may it continue Thorsten.

You were a cool guy when I met you in Cardiff a few years ago (the year you won the WPC), and you're still a very cool guy now. In my book anyway. For what that's worth...

Apparently, (so my kids* tell me) I'm very "un-cool", but then who is? *note: just 'coz I can't play Xbox 360. Whatever that is... Does that make me "un-cool"? What's "cool" anyway??? Answers please - fathers only...

Nice to have you on the forum Thorsten, it's great to have your opinions and experienced & knowledgable comment. I'm really looking forward to seeing you do well on the IPT - especially as you are just above (alphabetically, at least) my friend Pat Holtz - who I also hope finishes well.

Keep posting mate. It's always nice to hear things from a pro-player's point of view.

And... let's keep this thread going. Just for the fun of it.

BS

Mr Hohmann, I've a request here ... can you play in this year's WPC looking like you do in your avatar, thanks in advance :)
