was looking on craigslist for a table and came across a murrey. it looks like a pretty solid table from the pictures, almost resembling a gandy big G. I can get the thing for 400 dollars and im really considering it. its in really nice shape and im wondering if anyone has any info on these tables? I could throw new simonis 860 on it, get a new set of aramiths and still keep it around 1000. any info appreciated

A local Bowling Alley has two 9' Murrays in the Lounge and they both play

They used Murrey tables in The Color of Money movie. I understand they can be good if set up properly but I can tell you from experience that they can be hell if not set up right. A few years ago a guy I knew opened an 8 table room locally and had Murrey tables. To start, they put the original, used cloth back on them, big mistake. You could hit any rail on any table medium speed and the ball would come off the cushion in the air. All 8 tables were like that. The pockets spit out balls like they were four inch pockets. By far the worst commercial table I've ever played on. I suggest you contact Real King Cobra on AZ and get his opinion of Murrey tables.
Set up is the whole thing. I think it was RKC who posted on AZ about them being ok if set up right. That story I related, the whole thing was pretty much a nightmare about how to NOT run a commercial billiard room.
Your better off paying 1000 for a good GC. It cost the same to set up and you'll have a great table. Johnnyt

9800 professional - Matt black finish.
6400 pro- used in color of money - walnut laminate finish.
Both tables above available in > play area <46x92,50x100 and 56x112 snooker or carom.
Comet pro- walnut mica finish , only available in 44"x88"
What they liked to call "double 2x6" main frame, the tables are not to bad as long as they are cared for like eggs, not to many are still around. If well maintained and cared for they could make a decent home/practice table.... But unfortunately the unspoiled eggs are hard to find. Rail hardware updated and frame reinforcement for sure to handle the full sized 1" heavy slate.
A GC for a few hundred dollars more is well worth it unless you want a project table.

I have one apart in my basement. I used to play on it but some years ago I got a good price on a GC, so there it sits .
It is an ok table. Solid hardwood rails, framed slates, but it is all set on cheaper frame than the GC.
If you could find a GC go for it, but don't pass up the Murrey for anything less than a G C because for 400 its ok and it does play better than a lot of whats out there.

Totally agree on the Gold Crown...and they are available.
To me, buying a used Gold Crown is like buying an old Cadillac....
...anything it needs is worth fixing.
Buying a Murrey or a Gandy is like buying a Lada....
...it'll get you to the corner store, but it's crap.
The cost of installation and cloth is the same for whatever you buy.
So buy some quality, it'll last for a long time...I play on a 50 year old
Gold Crown a lot...it's still a good table.
Mind you, more and more I'm liking the Diamond...it's a Lexus.
