I can't play the day of or after a heavy shoulder or chest lift due to soreness/tightness, but in general once your body adjusts to lifting it should recover more quickly and your game should come back. Strength - especially core strength - is a big part of the game. You're not going to play well if you're off balance or have extra body movement. Not to say it's a requirement, but it definitely helps. Also helps to keep yourself out of the way...
