That song was by The Doors and it's a classic. What do you listen to? Richard Simmons Sweatin' to the Oldies?
OK, lets say the song is a classic. Still, is it appropiate for a poolroom?
Here is the basic areas that pool rooms fall into:
1) A players room. Here the dominant sound should be "pool sounds". Balls being racked, breaks, the sweet sound of a draw shot, etc. Any music played here is background at best. In Manhattan, where I am at, B'way Billiards would be that room. LAST years World Summit of pool in Grand Central Station was perfect. They played a wide range of music. However, it was played at a level where you really had to concentrate on it to listen.
2) A bangers/daters room. Here the music is loud and upbeat. Here the emphasis is placed on having fun almost party like. Since that is the goal they play party music - pop, hiphop, RnB etc. Again in NYC that would be Slate (where they had THIS years World Summit).
3) A combination of 1 & 2. This is most rooms today. Here you might see a pro playing on a table right next to a guy trying to show his date how to shoot (even if he can't shoot himself), or a group of guys tossing back a few and slamming every shot 100 mph. Here they play the same type of music as #2, but at a level just a little higher than #1. Here this would be Amsterdam Billiards.
I myself play bass and keyboards. So I have no problem with music itself. What I am talking about is the APPROPRIATENESS of certain music in certain situation. After all, would you play En Vogue's "never gonna get it" at a wedding reception? It is a great song....Just not at a wedding.
All music fits somewhere
No music fits everywhere
So that Doors song is a classic? So is Taps, but they don't play it in hospital waiting rooms now do they?
