Music in the poolroom

Hey MrLucky,

Hanging in...going to try to catch some of The US Amateur Finals at Cues tomorrow...playing the APA Captain's Tourny on the 20th @ Cues...haven't seen ya posting much lately...maybe I'll catch you on the Tables sometimes...
I will be at Cues on Sunday ! ask anita behind the bar to point me out! :)

I don't mind the music at a sane level, but where I play, the jukebox goes into psycho mode and must have a playlist it uses when no one puts money in it. So it's always the same music over n over, like Sinatra, then country, then gospel or some crap like that. What I can't stand is meaningless, foul, "gansta rap"....yo yo yo....shut the hell up! PLEASE.......:).....Gerry

If a poolroom is playing really bad music loudly, does it affect your game? I mean this was the kind of stuff that you would listen to while held up in a dark cheap motel with a bottle of Jack in one hand and a .38 in the other, cursing life for not giving you a fair shake. Has anything similar happened to anyone else?

The kiddee idiots at my ROMPER ROOM Pool Hall play some of the loudest SHIT, I wish I'd never heard. I am actually moving my residence to Tulsa, where I can get away from the trashy little Pool Room manned by idiots & frequented by kids dumber than the personnel. I no longer enjoy the place, so it's bye-bye for me.

I've spent about 5 Grand a year, in that place, for 5 or 6 years. The owner cares more about some idiot with a quarter, than he does the half dozen players that show up. The tables are OK, the bathrooms are dirty, the music is more clearly defined as NOISE, the clientel is unruly, rude & boisterous, the smoke cloud is terrible, service is slow, air-conditioning is NOT... but the owner is making some cash & that's what he's there for... the DO-RAY-ME Good Luck to him.

"Talk about loud"!

I was playing a good player (Aly-Oup) in a nightclub in Wakeegan, IL about 1975. Serious pool at $500 a set back then. It was called The Mouse Trap.
The music was soooooooooo loud that I couldn't hear a sound from breaking the 9-ball rack & everytime the drummer hit the base drum, the balls actually vibrated a little on the table.
NOT THE MUSIC - BUT - Another time while playing Steve Oaks at The Hip-hugger Lounge in Kokomo, IN., a completely naked go-go dancer jumped right onto the table as I was running out. She had been dancing just above the table on a runway and I think she didn't like the idea that more people were watching Steve & I play than paying any attention to her. I bent over as to continue to shoot (I wouldn't have), but I told her - "If you touch any of these balls, we are playing for $200 a game and that will be what you owe me. That was the last time I saw her pretty little ass that night.

Was that a '$200 ass kind of pretty'? Or would you have settled for the cash? :D

I play better if I like the music than if there is no music. If I don't like the music I can usually tune it out.

I miss the days when all you heard in a Pool Room was the click. clack, splunk of balls and the woofing of players at the Table and the commentary of the Railbirds...that said, I have adjusted to music being played, really doesn't bother me unless insanely LOUD! One thing I do dislike is Kareoke or Trivia...I find if someone plays a set with tunes I like it gets me in Zone...but my favorite practice time is Sunday during the day, I get to my Room around 11:30, me and the barmaid are the only ones there, peace at the Table is a good thing!
I miss just having pool room noise also.

Wanted

Qualifiers for potential Karaoke singers in a Pool room.

5 serious Pool players will be the judges. Those not
approved will not be allowed to make the audience cringe
with their off key singing. Only one exception to the qualifier,
if they are able to win an wet T-Shirt contest, or hold up
a Cowboy hat on their boobs without any hands, they may
go ahead and sing.

Jukebox music never really seems to bother me.

I wish this had been jukebox music, maybe then it would have been a little more mainstream. This was the managers PERSONAL Ipod. Apparently, the manager is into Goth and Punk. How loud is the music? Once the person I was playing did not hear me call a pushout. It cost me ball in hand, and the rack!!

The only music I like in ANY pool room is, clicking balls, players talking about making a game, the ball cleaner going, the Houseman spinning a shaft or doing a tip on the lathe, and the occasional #$%$% when someone sais "GIN" or makes the game ball......Gerry

I mean this was the kind of stuff that you would listen to while held up in a dark cheap motel with a bottle of Jack in one hand and a .38 in the other, cursing life for not giving you a fair shake. And it got worse song after song. Finally, when a song came on about a teenage walking into his parents room and announcing "Mom, Dad I'm here to kill you" I just picked up the balls, broke down my cue and left. My concentration level was NOTHING at that point. Has anything similar happened to anyone else?

That song was by The Doors and it's a classic. What do you listen to? Richard Simmons Sweatin' to the Oldies?

Can you do anything except tell stories? And they are always about you playing for money and winning. Now its about people wanting to watch two smelly pool players with beer guts go at it instead of a naked go go dancer? SURE BUDDY.

To each, there own, I say!

I do also tell stories about losing at pool but as I age, I seem to remember the winners better than the losers.

As far as "two smelly pool players with beer guts go at it" - By the looks of your avatar photo - you could use some personal grooming products.

Just kidding - TY & GL

Has anyone found a post from cuetechwhatever that if worth the trouble?

I am thinking splinterhead has another pen name.

Hmmmm ....

NO. 1 - I enjoy Tom's stories. No. 2 - I know who Tom is from the
old days (not sure if he remembers me) No. 3 - He's brushed more
chalk off his shirtsleeve going around the end of the table than
you have seen. No. 4 - He's the real deal No. 5 I got a few stories
of my own No. 6 This ole man will play you any day - Bolt up punk.

OK, lets say the song is a classic. Still, is it appropiate for a poolroom?

Here is the basic areas that pool rooms fall into:

1) A players room. Here the dominant sound should be "pool sounds". Balls being racked, breaks, the sweet sound of a draw shot, etc. Any music played here is background at best. In Manhattan, where I am at, B'way Billiards would be that room. LAST years World Summit of pool in Grand Central Station was perfect. They played a wide range of music. However, it was played at a level where you really had to concentrate on it to listen.

2) A bangers/daters room. Here the music is loud and upbeat. Here the emphasis is placed on having fun almost party like. Since that is the goal they play party music - pop, hiphop, RnB etc. Again in NYC that would be Slate (where they had THIS years World Summit).

3) A combination of 1 & 2. This is most rooms today. Here you might see a pro playing on a table right next to a guy trying to show his date how to shoot (even if he can't shoot himself), or a group of guys tossing back a few and slamming every shot 100 mph. Here they play the same type of music as #2, but at a level just a little higher than #1. Here this would be Amsterdam Billiards.

I myself play bass and keyboards. So I have no problem with music itself. What I am talking about is the APPROPRIATENESS of certain music in certain situation. After all, would you play En Vogue's "never gonna get it" at a wedding reception? It is a great song....Just not at a wedding.

All music fits somewhere

No music fits everywhere

So that Doors song is a classic? So is Taps, but they don't play it in hospital waiting rooms now do they?

G-man,
you brought back some great memories again. those days are over around here as the players now wouldn`t bet $5.00 they`re white. Action ended when Andy Toth stopped playing. Some moved away, some got married and some did both as you already know. It was good to see Missy Cue again.
Take care my old friend, you are always welcome in my room.
