I was just out playing my good friend, who is something of a mentor to me. It was getting close to time to quit, we both have early morning jobs. He says, "I'll race you to the end of the table, then I'm outta here". He had two coins that he placed under the rail at the center of the foot rail. As most of you know, a race to the other end, is a race to nine.

I got the first game, actually I lucked the nine in, while attempting a two way shot on the one. I was keyed, it was probably the first time, that I ever had the lead in a race against him. :)

OK, to make a long story short, I really concentrated and did all I could to not let my emotions get the best of me. I was behind three times in the race. I finally came out the winner, 9 to 7.

Usually, when we race to nine, I only win an average of maybe three games. I have gotten to 5 before. I don't think I ever got blanked.

After I won, he said, "Congratulations. Do you know what you won?"

"Bragging rights?" I asked.

"You won those two pennies." he said, as he pointed to the markers.

I told him, "I am going to have the pennies mounted on a plaque".

Anyway, it was exciting for me, and I wanted to share it with you all. It's times like these, that make all the practice and frustrations, worthwhile. I'm sure, tomorrow he will give me a good thumping on the table, but for now I'm feeling just fine.

LOL, that's awesome Tracy, congrats on your win. I still remember my 1st break and run in 9 ball.... the place and the table number. ;) Cherish your pennies... you really should showcase them in some small way. Go check out one of those trophy stores. They carry much more than just trophies... you might be able to find something small & cheap to set them in as a nice little reminder. :)

I am going to do something with them, for sure. They are both 1994's, mine was the dirtier of the two. I don't even think I will polish them. Maybe, I will make a small mock table with my dirty one under the center of the head rail and the other at the 7th diamond.

T,
WAY TO GO!!! You are definitely capable of it in top gear - glad to hear it. Was it on a 7 footer or a 9 footer??? How much credit do I get for serving as your sparring partner/punching bag - how about a little jelly???

What do you want? Him to grind off the edge of one of them? Give him a little slack. You can have part of the next score. I'm sure he'll share that one. Congrats Tracy. One step at a time. Every little victory, adds to the confidence, and takes you a little farther. Sam

Grasshoppa! You beat your mentor, way to go! Keep up the good work and as Mr. Miyagi would say, "Focus!" (or is that "Wax on, wax off?" :p )

satman,
Some guys just forget their friends once they make that first big score.

Tracy,

You could have a set of joint protectors made and have the pennies set in the ends similar to how guys put ivory "caps" on them. You could have your "winning" penny installed heads up and the "loser" penny installed tail up or vice versa. Congrats on your personal victory!

It is an old Brunswick 9' Sarasota model. The table belongs to the VFW here in town. It may not be a GC or Diamond, but the table time is free. :)
