my 100 ball run goal

Ok, New to the 14.1 forum, I think;) So, my question/dilemma, I've been playing for close to 10 YRS now. I started late in life,28:( now mind you, I work a lot, I average around 70hrs a week, I usually take a day off a month(sometimes)! I was fortunate enough to start out playing the right way, lessons with Joe Tucker, Ginky, and a couple top players in the providence RI, area! Ok ok ok, the question,,,, here goes! I play a couple hrs a day, 4-7 days a week, I only play when I want to play because it's pointless to play when I don't feel it. So, the past week or so, I feel like my game has jumped a bit,(straight pool), a couple weeks I was usually getting almost through 2 racks fairly consistently. Now, I'm consistently hitting 3 racks, sometimes 2 and 3 separate times during each session!:)

Quick info on my table, gc3 with 4-3/8" pockets in the basement with a dehumidifier going constantly(60% humidity) and also, I have a wall and a lolly column in the way! The cloth is semonis 760 about 4 YRS old now!

So here it is, am I getting close to hitting my goal of 100???? It's so frustrating to get so close to another great rack completed! I feel like I've made improvments, and I do have a couple 80 ball runs,(months back) but now, I'm feeling so confident, yet, I feel like I've still got a long way to go to hit that goal!

Any thoughts and/or suggestions about this would greatly be appreciated:) I've already told myself it will happen ,,, just let it!

On a side note, to all those aspiring players out there, it doesn't matter what age you start playing, learn to play all the games!!! I've found my passion, straight pool! But I play all the games fairly equal because I play all the games! And for fun, when I can't see the balls right, and I have urge to play,, I play 3 cushions on my table, yes I do, why not;)

Play all the games!! Thanks for reading:)

I don't know the answer to your question but had some questions/comments.

1. How long is your table?
2. How do you manage to play position on a skating rink? :)

I have a theory. Go to the thread titled, "Help me get a clue" by wigglybridge. Look at my diagram of Mosconi's draw drill (I notice that I placed 7 balls on the table. There should be 6). I think if you can't do this drill 5 times in a row, as Mosconi suggests, then you aren't ready for a 100 ball run.

Of course if you've run a couple of 80's then I don't think anybody can tell you that you aren't capable of popping off 100 at any time. I think if you can run 50 balls every day, then it is a matter of course that you will do it twice in a row within a reasonable amount of time.

I thought all gold crown 3(gc3) were 9 ft!?!? And no, it's no skating rink;) plays pretty slow, probably because it's 4 YRS old! Thanks for the drill:)

You can get Gold Crowns in different lengths. Not to sound dumb, but you are sure it is 760 Simonis? I used to play at a place that had worn 760 and you could take a shot and go for a bathroom break while you waited for the cue ball to stop rolling.

1000% it's 760! I'm actually thinking about getting a nap cloth! I didn't know gold crowns came in different sizes! Oh, by the way, my table is slow! I can do a table length draw shot at my local pool hall with cloth no more than a few months old 9-10 times out of 10! On my table,,,, 2-3, and I have to be stroking real good;)

That's strange. You're aware that the standard Simonis pool cloth is 860, and that 760 is faster than 860? I'm not sure why you'd now want a nap cloth, given what is in use in most pool halls now.

As to running 100 -- given that you're still in your 30's and have "a couple 80 ball runs," I'd say you're a pretty good bet to do so. I think playing a couple hours a day most days of the week gives you plenty of time for structured practice and the resulting improvement.

Thanks! The reason why I like nap cloth is for me, I seem to be able to predict the balls better when I'm breaking clusters! I feel I have a better sense of control of the rock! This may be all in my head, but I see less skids, better (predictable) cue ball, and the fact that you need a "better" stroke to play on nap cloth!

Again, May be in my head, but it sure looks like it does:)

My 860 is 14 years old and still plays fast. My table has been dismantled and set up four times and still has the original cloth. I'm told it can't be stretched again, though. I've played on 760 and it was like playing on ice:confused: It wasn't new cloth, either.

What will help you the most, IMO, is playing the right patterns. A few days after watching Danny Harriman's 351 ball run DVD, I ran 112.

Couple of things; you say that lately your game has picked up and you occasionally get through 2-3 racks. Then you say you've had a couple of 80 ball runs?? You definitely have 760 Simonis, which is much faster than 860 and now it's slow?? I have 860 on the bed and 760 on the rails, which is the way it was delivered. Admittedly, it's not as fast as it was when it was new but is plenty fast enough and it's 14 years old. Not many people play on it but me and I play very little rotation style games. If you can play three cushion on your table effectively it ain't slow!

If you already have a couple 80 ball runs you are close. You must really love the game to work 70 hours a week and find time to play a couple hours of pool.

Totally agree! I have to admit, my pattern play is much more conservative now! Playing rotation games makes me think that most shots are fairly easy! I keep forgetting,,,, when I miss, my run ends!

But now, with the conservative approach, I seem to run more balls a lot easier! And yes, always watching the better players!

By the way, where did you watch Danny's run?

The 2 80's were reckless! Not much control and getting very lucky leaves! The humidity inmy basement definitely slows down the table! I play on 860 at the pool hall and it's a bit faster for sure!

Yes! I love it a great deal! It's a beautiful sport that is very misunderstood! And that's a shame:(

Danny sold some dvds of his run a while back.

I see he has made it available to watch on Inside Pool's youtube channel.

Awesome! But due to having to have to purchase it through inside pool and watch on the internet, is it possible to buy the DVD? I don't care about how much it is, I really want to watch a nice run like that! Does Danny come on here at all? Maybe I can buy straight from him!

Danny Harriman, if you see this, send me a pm, I will gladly buy the DVD! I don't care how much, just let me know, thanks in advance!

Your pockets are too tight for straight pool......although practicing straight pool on 4 3/8" pockets will definitely improve all other games. With 4 3/4 or 5"pockets you would have already run 100+ balls.

Ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Don't say that!!! I hate that whole pocket size opening thingamabob people always talk about!!!

Just kidding;) I kinda feel that way, but because I don't get out much and I bought the table almost 4 YRS ago, I had the table set for rotation games! I barely new what straight pool was then;)! I'm in a fairly rough environment with my table and sometimes I think I would of run 100 by now, but the reality is I haven't! I'm not one of those players that says,,,,,"aaawwwwww I got robbed" or "the stupid table" or any of that! When I miss,,,, I missed! Unless I see the ball skid, it's my fault,,,, PERIOD!!

Thanks for the positive thought of already running 100+:) someday,, hopefully;)

I played many many years before I broke a 100 . And actually the first time I did I ran a 205 Once the Wall was knocked Down I went into free Stroke !
I ran many 70,80,etc
Very plain and Simple If you can run 80 you can run a 100
Its not like your running 20's and talking about running a 100
I think at your level forget the # and it will come
It's human nature as you/we approach a certain # we start thinling about that #
Play the 84th shot just the same as the 4th shot and the 27th shot
If you treat all shots the same the #'s get less significant IMHO
