My 1st Southwest, a Jerry Franklin and some questions.

I just purchased a Jerry Franklin era Southwest, pin # 460 95 The forearm is Brazilian rosewood, and the points are purple heart with blue, white, and blue veneers. It came with one shaft, is dead straight, but could maybe use a re-finish. I'm curious what my Southwest expert friends have to say about it. 1. What is this cue worth in its current condition? 2. How much and how long would it take to get Southwest to make a 2nd shaft and re-finish the cue? 3. What would it be worth re-finished vs original but with some minor dings? 4. Should I re-finish or leave original? I like the way the cue hits, and I can now see what all the fuss is about these cues. Thanks everyone.

Franklin SW

Nice cue you purchased. Can never go wrong with a SW!
I can tell you that a new shaft and refinish will take between 16-24 weeks depending how busy Laurie and the guys are, and usually very busy. Refinish is $300, and a shaft is $300 also unless you order Ivory ferrule, then add $100.
I will not give you a price, because they vary in many peoples eyes.
Some people like to keep them original, and some want them new and shiny.
I will say this, that I have never got my money back in return for money spent on refinish, or special joint protectors, but I still do it a lot
Good luck with what ever you decide. One thing I know, is if you play with it for a couple weeks you will be hooked :)
Regards,
Greg

It looks lite for Brazilian rosewood but I guess it may come in lighter shades all by Tascarellas almost look like Ebony. Nice cue for sure! Congrats

Its a nice cue for sure. Value, 2800-3500+ in that range (restored by SW) ... I would have SW do any and all work that you have done on the cue. Get the letter from Laurie, etc.. maybe have them make a set of caps.

The darkwood forearm is nice, as is the unique veneers combo...

It does look like brazilian rosewood alright. Also have to tell you that you have a pretty rare SW.
I talked to Mike from SW and he told me that there were not that many br SW's made. In fact Mike told me the wood was too oily so therefore they never offered br as a wood of choice for their cues. Very rare cue and great find. Like Greg said deserves a refinish and a new shaft.
Congrats on a super nice find.

Thanks!

I appreciate the info guys. I'll give Laurie a call next week, with the pin # I think she can look up the cue and tell me exactly what kind of wood the forearm is. My friend Ernie Martinez could build me another shaft and re-finish the cue in half the time for half the $, but I think since Southwest is still in business, its only proper to have them do any work on the cue. I'm not going to re-finish it right away, I'm going to play with it some more first.

Sw

If you decide to refinish the cue, there is only ONE place to do it- South West.
The value will not decrease, and they do the best work!
With all the other great cues you own, you will not miss your SW for a few months, and then you have something to look forward to when you get it back in pristine condition.
Only thing is they might not carry that particular wrap anymore, and it is a good one.
Well good luck with whatever you decide, you might even want to sell it- hint hint!

Greg

I would...

I would leave the cue original...unless there is some major issue.
Nice pickup, Im going to guess it is pau ferro

Pau ferro would be my guess on the wood, also.....rosewoods like brazilian, indian, madagascar are exceedingly rare for SWs. Let us know how it turns out.

Looks like Pau ferro to me to. With one shaft and needing refinish, I'd price about $2,300 to $2,700.....at least that is what I paid for the last three Franklins that I've come across in that condition.

Maybe I caught Laurie at a good time, but the tournaround for that work was just a few weeks as I recall for the last job she did for me.

Great cue. As long as there are no big chips in the finish I would leave it as is. Theres a lot of years invested in that patina and no other way to get it. Freshly finished SW's are all over the place but the old ones always seem cooler to me.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Enjoy your new cue.

Nice cue.

What I might consider would be just a clean up job. Just have it polished up properly and clean/press the wrap as needed. You might be surprised how that could come out. It could preserve but minimize the minor finish imperfections and patina while maximizing the original finish presentation.

Personally, I dig the patina. I would play the heck out of it and leave it the way it is aside from any normal tip work or attention to the shafts (no sanding).

Nothing like a true played players cue...and what some of the collectors don't realize is that a played collectible cue will always get sold regardless if its chalked or not!!!

Also, nice to see that I may know my woods too...LOL

I actually spoke with Laurie on Friday, and ga9ball is right on the price. $300 for refinish and rewrap, $300 a shaft and $50 for an LOA. Laurie stated 10-20 weeks for a turn around time.

Nice vintage SW...I like the veneer work. If you're asking about a refinish sounds like you've decided already. Let the folks at SW do the work with a new shaft and LOA. Worth every penny...

i first went to SW on 7/1/86 got my cue may 87-$371 including $21 for shipping, lol

Point is i been around SW for lots of years, It is a mistake to refinish this cue ESPECIALLY because Jerry painted it. Patina is cool, want a new cue-buy a new cue.

If you do refinish it, then only SW should touch the cue, I always have something going on there, and know everyone well. There is zero benefit to refinish this cue. Buy a new one if you must have a fresh crispy one, nothing wrong with that. I have SW's that are well played and never chalked.

Jerry was one of the best cue painters ever, even by todays standards. I have a TAD he refinished for me, I retired it when Jerry passed because its mint, and i didn't want to ding it up, its a used up wrap(jerry managed to save it for me) with a perfect clear coat on the BEM, $$$ can't buy that cue of my first SW from 86, I remember the exact day cause it was my dads B-day. 7-1.

I miss my dad and Jerry,

enjoy your SW

Eric:)
