My back and Pool

Here is the deal. In my 10 years in Jacksonville building my company I went from 180 pounds to 220 pounds, shot pool maybe twice.

I am in my 60's and on my left side hip it has a habit of shifting. Right side lower back I get sciatica.

I won a tournament a few weeks back coming from the losers side, had to shoot well over 200 games.

I had nothing left though and the next day lower back was swollen so bad it looked like I had 2 butts.

I know it will help some taking 40 Lbs off.

Does anyone wear any kind of brace or certain excercises in this shape?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

I bought this book for $10. It may or may not help you. But if it does, it could very well be the best $10 you spent. It has you do a series of exercises specifically to move things around in your back, to relieve pressure on your sciatic nerve. These exercises are easy to do. They are not core strengthening, or stretching. They are different and specifically designed to provide clearance between your disks and the sciatic nerve.

It helped improve my situation, and I'd recommend giving it a shot.

Disclaimer, I'm not a Dr... just a bad pool player with a bad back.

How about a picture of your footwear when this happened.

I suffered a compression fracture in T12 back in December. For the first couple of months I was concerned that I would never be pain free again. I started PT on my doctor's recommendation, and I have seen a huge improvement. After 6-8 weeks of doing proper stretching and working out on a MedX machine, my back is stronger than it has ever been, and I am virtually pain free. Now when I have pain after a day of working in the yard, playing pool, etc. I can fall back on the stretches I learned from my therapist and usually get it sorted out on my own. I can't recommend PT and stretching highly enough.

Golf Fitness Academy on the golf channel has some great tips and exercises for your back I am with Bill on the shoes good shoes with the right support are a must and for me if I notice my hamstrings getting tight I have not been stretching enough and I had better get back on it or I will be out of commission for a few days

Stretching........
I suffered from constant lower back pain for three years. Had my wife walk on my back almost every night and I was only 35 at the time and only 130lbs. One day while at the mall (long day shopping with my wife) I couldn’t take it any more! I started stretching there in the middle of the isles. I did it all day long. Two days later it dawned on me, i hadn't experienced any pain for those two days! Sure enough the pain returned so I began my days with stretching for about 5 minutes as soon as I got out of bed. It's been four years now without pain! I suffered three years of lower back pain that could have been prevented with just 5 min of stretching. We may not have the same back issue but I really recommend some kind of daily stretching exercise.

Good book. I have a herniated disc and had bad sciatica for a while but it seems to have resolved somewhat thanks to stretching.

Here is a free download of the book.
