My best friend and I are currently engaged in a race to 5,000.

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. Looking forward to many good pool conversations with everyone!

Anyhow, we've been playing for a few months now and I've been documenting the adventure on another pool forum. I don't want to post all the details and bore you all, so here is the story up until now.

BTW, you can sign up and start talking there too. We encourage that. ;)

Anyhow, back on the point, at this point we are at 240 games for him and 238 for me. It's hard for me to believe that after nearly 500 games in the set that we are only 2 racks apart.

To give a little backstory on myself and my friend, we are both in our young 20's and we've been shooting pool for about 4 years now. He got me into pool shortly after he got started and showed me the ropes of the game.

Since then we have slowly progressed into almost completely different (yet statistically equal) players. He is fundamentally good at pool. Good stroke, great form, good table vision. He prefers to use natural angles to get shape, but lacks somewhat in the realm of english. He is also a little hot tempered and a few mistakes on the table can spin him out of the zone and effectively ruin some of his night.

I am also fundamentally good, but my strength lies in my ability to spin the ball in the way I want to get shape, but my downfall is that I rarely hit the ball past a medium speed and when forced to hit the ball hard I will frequently miss the shot altogether. I'm a very mentally balanced player, which is a blessing and a curse. I can hang tough through rough nights, but I may not be as cognizant of the downfalls of my game currently.

Anyhow, I will be updating this thread as the score and situation changes. Also, I will check in to comment and answer any questions you may have. Stay tuned for more!

Welcome! You've come to the best place possible to share your love for the game! Make sure you're up next time!

A few questions.

1. What game are you playing?

2. Is there a bet involved.?

3. Are you keeping track of B&R's?

I played a friend a race to 100 one time and he beat like a 100-97 and it was a long, long ass day of drinking & playing pool. That was on a tight 9 footer in his garage. I bet if you guys played every weekend you could finish in a year.

And some people think straight pool is boring!

Welcome to the forum!

I have two friends (C+ level) that play together 5-6 days a week. They have been doing races to 100 for about six months now. It normally takes them 3-4 days to complete a set.

Suprisingly, the largest split in score so far is 91-100. One of them is two sets up now.

Stones,
Why so surprised? If 9-ball is the game; and if the 2 players are somewhat close in skill level; the results are fairly random (see Efren/Earl in the Color of Money series). I'm totally unconvinced that 9-ball is a game at which fine gradations of skill can be differentiated.

Do you realize, if the two of you played 8 hours a day every day, it would take nearly 50 days to complete?

When you're done, you guys want to count how many leaves are falling off the trees on my block? I've always wondered what the answer would be. You guys can make guesses before and we'll declare one of you the winner!

You may as well bet each other a million dollars on the set.

That way, once you're done, a million dollars will be worth about twenty modern bucks.

:D

It would probably be better to play races to 100 or something. Although you're even now, if someone pulls ahead significantly that could put a damper on the motivation for a such a long race.

We are playing 9 ball.

At first there wasn't a bet, but we are debating whether or not to shell out $1 a game that you lose by.

Neither of us are break and run out players really. We've both had a smalll handful of them. We suspect that at some point we will be during the race, but not right now.

Time has nothing to do with this. We really just love the game and we are such close friends that we kind of want it to go on forever.

I understand - you can't quit eachother. :)

Just out of curiosity, how many innings per game? That would give us an idea how long each game lasts.

On average I'd say probably 2-3 a piece per rack.

We aren't "A" players, but we are pretty sharp. I'd say we are both a threat to get out from the 5 ball with ball in hand or half decent shape and a good spread. I've elevated my game quite a bit over the last few weeks and I'm playing sharper than ever.

He is a very lucky player at times and will have a missed shot go 3 or 4 rails and fall more often than I'd like. I, however, get very fortunate and leave him safe a lot.
