My claim to fame

Here's my claim to fame...pool related.

Some pool leagues use some sort of marker to indicated the designated pocket for the 8-ball. Here's why.

1977. Dayton, Ohio. National BCA 8-Ball Championships. I was a referree. Every match had a ref. I watched the shooter closely and he made no indication of where he was playing the 8. He made the 8 and I called a foul. He protested. The tournament directors huddled and decided a physical marker would would erase all conflicts of opinion as to wheather the pocket was "called" or not.

What's your claim to fame?
Hey!!. This is my claim to fame thread. Go start your own ;) .

That's cool information...Rep to you!

BTW, contrary to what people think, Proctor & Gamble didn't "invent" the Magic Eraser. It was an accidental discovery from an automobile manufacturer, who was using the stuff as insulation. One of the employees spilled something on the floor, and used a piece of whatever the foam is to sop it up, and noticed that it also cleaned the scuff marks off the tile. The rest, as they say, is history.

Hhhmmmm never thought of using one of those on a cue....I'll hafta give that a try. TommyT your claim to fame can at any rate at least be that you introduced me to using a Magic Eraser on a pool cue

Serendipity is responsible for more things than you could ever imagine: teflon, post it notes, slinky toy; I believe a book was written about this and its all true

I'll give you the rep.............but

You'd do better to devote some time to your one pocket game.

The reason I started this thread was twofold. The first was for my own self edification:wink: . My life is so lame that I need the approval of strangers to help me get thru the day. The second reason was that I knew this thread would create some interest and I thought this forum was getting a little boring. I've seen lamer threads than this lately.

TommyT........Mr. Magic Eraser:ok:

And CORNERMAN who are you to presume everything on this site is beyound doubt??
Who am I? I'm the one who just set it straight to you that it was TommyT who introduced the Magic Eraser to the internet public. I thought that was clear.

I didn't say he introduced it to you or to everyone in the world.

Sorry but I don't know u and I'v been using them for years, maybe 5 or 6. So enjoy ur fame but keep in mind ... its a very big world out there. They even sell a knock off brand in the dollar stores.
I'm not sure what possessed TommyT to start this thread to begin with, but I guarantee that he was absolutely the poster who introduced The Magic Eraser to the internet pool playing public.

I didn't realize there was any doubt.

Didn't you coin the term Squerve??
Nope. I coined the term "Dynamic Backhand English." I believe Patrick Johnson gets the credit for the term Squerve and the naming of the game FARGO.

This is a ridiculous reason for starting a thread....but in his defence, the link he gave was from back in '02.

Oh, and did I mention that this is a ridiculous thread?

Not anymore than a bunch of other threads on here...lol

Wow!

Have you ever heard of Larry Widdows?

I'm sure others remember that name and the significance of the "pocket marker".

Does anybody else remember this?
:)

1989 APA singles finals against Mike Bandy. One of the larger brain cramps I've ever heard of.

You got it!
(But it was the 1989 BCA Nationals in St. Louis)

I think Mike Bandy owes Frankenstroke a beer

(and a BIG thank you!)

:D

(note: Larry lost hill/hill because he forgot to mark his pocket on the match 8 ball, and Bandy won)

cincyman.... yes thats it .. If you have a dollar store near u, they may have a generic brand there for a buck... just as good. there is also a version that has a blueish sponge attached to one side. so its 1/2 eraser.. 1/2 sponge.

I'm heading to the dollar store to check this stuff out. Sounds like good shaft cleaner if what everybody says is true.

Several things to consider, from all the discussion about this product in the past several years (ever since TommyT first brough this wonderful product to our collective attention ;) ):

Some people use it damp. Some use it with denatured alcohol. Some use it completely bone dry. YMMV.

I've found that some shafts there seems to either be residue or a grain raising, while other shafts don't. I thought it was actually the sponge material itself, but today, I'm not so convinced since it doesn't happen on all shafts.

I've also found that resealing the shaft is a really good idea.
