My cue has a funny sound to it

I was playing the other day and all of a sudden my cue started making a real weird noise on every hit. It sounds like something is loose, but the ferrule is just as secure as ever and the tip is fine. The sound is kind of a dull vibration, not sure how else to describe it.

I can still play with it, but something is not right. The sound seems to be worse when I'm not hitting center ball.

Someone at the pool hall said it might be the dowel inside the ferrule that is loose...but I don't know anything about this stuff. What should I do?

If anyone is curious, it is a Dale Perry DP-R shaft.

I had a "buzz" on my cue for a while...

bugged the hell out of me...

but it ended up.... the tip was partially loose...

it was glued tight over about half the circumference... but the other half (roughly) had become unglued...

I replaced the tip .. problem solved

Take the the shaft holding lightly at the joint collar and lightly tap the tip end on the table, if the problem is with the shaft you will here the sound. Next tap the cues butt in the same manner and see if you here the sound, if you do remove the bumper and check that the weight bolt if it has one is tight, if you can turn it, tighten it. If the shaft is making the sound it could be the ferrule, or the shaft insert. If it is not the weight bolt check the tip, apply some pressure with your thumb to the side of the tip and see if it moves or pops off. If none of this works take the cue to a repairman or cue maker, I am certain they can easily find the problem.

Hope this helps

I had a cue that this happened to, and turned out to just be the tip itself needing to be replaced. It was very thin, but it made a sound every time I hit with it. Once replaced everything was fine.

Another thing I have seen is the weight in the butt has come loose and makes a sound too!

A loose tip and/or ferrel will usually make a 'ticking' sound. A loose weight bolt will usually make a small 'popping' noise', and you can sometimes feel it in you right hand. Buzzing, when felt or heard is usually an internal cue propblem.
Check the joint. Make sure you have screwed the shaft to the butt reasonably tight, and take a look at the joint faces. Make sure they are smooth and undamaged. Always use joint protectors. If I had used joint protectors I would'nt be in the spot I am now, if you get my drift.

So last night I tried tapping the cue against my dining room table to try to reproduce the sound but no luck.

The tip looks to be installed well and I didn't see any problems with the joint. I'm in Pittsburgh and play league out of Paul Mottey's pool hall, so next time I see him maybe I'll ask him if he could help me diagnose it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice...I'll post an update when I figure out what the deal is.

I once had a brand new custom cue that had a slight rattle when you dropped it gently on the rubber bumper. The maker was long gone by the time i discovered it as it didnt rattle on a normal shot. I didnt get to see him til a week later and he was positive i had thrown it or dropped it. Nothing like that happened. He took it apart and found something around the joint i believe and he still thought somehow i had caused it but he did fix it free of charge and im sure he learned something as that whatever it was was loose.

Most reputable CMs repair free of charge if its a problem with the cue. They don't make excuses trying to blame the customer.I wouldn't use him again, even though he made it right. Its like he was calling you a liar.

He thought he built them so solid. I thought once he found the problem he would know that it was not me but he continued with "are you sure you didnt drop it or throw it?" Im not sure he ever did believe me. I hadn't even had a chance to drop it, i discovered the noise within an hour of receiving it. Not to mention that nothing in a stick is supposed to jar loose on a simple drop.

OP, Mine did that for a week or so, but I didn't have time to fix it, so I just kept playing :D.....after a month, it's disappeared, like magic.....no kidding, stopped making the noise entirely....I have zero idea what happened....

Well, it'll be about 2 weeks until I can have it looked at...I'll keep my fingers crossed ;)

Are the joint surfaces clean? It could be the joint isn't tightening squarely.

I don't think it's the joint surface because I was playing with it fine and then all of a sudden it started making the noise.

Come to think of it, I had just hit a long, hard draw shot where the tip pushed down on the felt on the follow through. After that it started making the loose rattling/buzz noise.
