My DCC Impression

So I just spent over 2 days (Friday Night, Saturday Night, all day Sunday) at the DCC and thought I would give everyone my impression. Sorry if this gets too long.

Overall, I thought it was a positive experience and enjoyed the new venue. The Horseshoe is a decent hotel with much better food than the Executive West, although that is not saying much. The buffet is a bit over priced for what there is to offer in way of variety but still a good place to grab a quick meal. I think the locals feel the same way because the buffet overall was never crowded as it is here in the St Louis casinos. The two cafes I ate in (one across from the buffet - one by the hotel lobby) were very good. Just be prepared that in a casino, food is priced a little higher as there is the expectation that some of it will be comped.

Now, whoever the architect that designed this casino is, in my opinion, a complete idiot. It is literally a 7 minute walk from the hotel to the food/tournament area and then another 7 minute walk to the casino. Rooms at the Riviera in are closer to the tournament room than they are here. I kinda got the impression that the hotel does not do an overall big business on a normal weekly basis. This was mainly from the fact of the overall setup along with the 'slowness' of some hotel employees. I don't think they were used to having a crowd to service.

The overall setup of the tournament was great. The main tournament room downstairs was a little tight but the TV table was still a great setup. Upstairs, the TAR action room could have taken out one table and put in risers for more viewers. I think if there ever was going to be any big action, space definitely would be an issue. Also, upstairs the larger room where the Fatboy challenge was held was a great room. Again, seating was an issue. I think the # of seat was about the same as the old place but the difference was there was no room behind the seats in any of the rooms to stand. You either had to be in a seat or couldn't be in the room. The old place was better in seeing tournament matches as they were centralized. At the Horseshoe, a great match might be taking place in a side room and no one would even know.

I think the DCC, if they have the tournament here next year, should have more signs up. Unless you sought things out for yourself or asked a friend, you did not realize that there were tables down a hall. Also, maybe for a way for the intercom to work throughout all tournament areas. There was an issue on Sunday with the computer system and many matches were delayed. I was sitting with Tony Chohan watching a tournament match and he was at a loss on when he played next. He got bored and left the main tournament area. Five minutes later, they called his match. I had to go track him down or felt he would be in jeopardy of missing his match and forfeiting.

The mini bars placed all over was great. You never had to go far to look for a drink.

I didn't talk to any vendors specifically but they were sectioned off to the side and probably not too happy that they were not in the direct line of traffic. There seemed to be less vendors as well. By the way, Jess (I believe that is her name) of OB-1 cues looks better in person than she did on the TAR feed. For those of you who watched Thursday night, you will understand.

The action was limited. I got to make two $500 bets. Lots of talk of something going to happen but they never came about. Late Saturday night/early Sunday morning was just like the old DCC. People were woofing, gaff bets were being made. After the first day, the issue of security and gambling never even came up. People were talking freely and taking money out of their pockets to be posted. Sunday felt more like the old DCC in the action room.

Ok, enough for now.

Oh and the strangest sight I saw. Saturday early evening, in the main lobby outside the tournament room. Charlie Williams wearing white sweat pants, a white wife beater and black workout gloves. Just standing there, leaning against a pole. I really didn't know what to think of it.

Thanks for the update Watchez. I have heard from several people that the walk to the tournament area is ridiculous.

Charlie must have moved to Alabama or South Carolina :D .

I have been to the DERBY for 7 yrs in a row & have cancelled my stay near by! I noticed there was alot of past pros not present & my expenses was going to be more & less convient to stay close by. perhaps next yr there will be a better location.:frown:

I share these thoughts too.

Other issues, are that the tables are all over the place. People cant find their tables.

I would recommend that they have a few "officials" or others to help with walkie talkies or something. As tables are empty for long periods, etc.

It really needs some organization. I OFFER MY SERVICES FOR ANYONE READING THIS TO HELP. (So I am not part of the problem but potentialy part of the solution).

I think this move shows that the tourneyment is a big beast and tough for anyone or group to make it come off perfect.

Computer problems, etc.

I actually asked about the layout of the Casino and the mile walk back and forth. It was explained the the Casino was built this way because of the low laying ground (called river bottom ground) floods. It is built on stilts in some locations etc. No excuse, just an explaination.

The comment I have heard numerous times is this is worse, and most thought that, that was impossible.

The experience so far has been good and there are lots of potential here. But it has a long way to go. But give them a chance, its only the first year.

AGAIN I OFFER TO HELP OR SUGGEST. I AM AN ENGINEERING MANAGER, AND HAVE COORIDINATED AUTOMATION AND ENGINEERING PROJECTS FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

Best wishes

Ken

How close did you stay in the previous 7 years? Which past pros do you miss that were not there? The new young pros are just great and put on a great show.

Damn! I figured the new location was gonna be head and shoulders above the old one. I just checked the reviews on Trip Advisor. The ratings and reviews are pretty scary. Glad IM staying offsite.

7 minute walk, are you a marathon runner, hell its 1/2 miles or 1km from my room to a pool table,

why is this place so big???? its the worst use of space in history, the expense to heat and cool it, build it is huge and one little casino covers that nut, that should tell you something about your chances there. How they get a single person to play in those clip joints amazes me. I see wise guys get stupid time and time again in those joints. After 20 years in vegas I still aint figured it out.

i wont get sick here like the last joint, food is somewhat better, but the floor plan dosent work as good-no matter what, they did a good job with they had to work with. Harrahs didnt do any body any favors, thank Greg for his effort.

the vendors got screwed, bad location, no traffic and high rent.

i would come back.

if the floor plan worked out better then it would be perfect, still fun to see friends, and i'm glad the turn out was good.

I like it here!

Have met a lot of the AZ'ers, and enjoying my stay here at the AZ-room.

I share the thoughts about the poor vendors, and I can't believe why they built this building so enourmous huge. I think I will hire someone to carry me from my room to the tournament room, that walk is nearly killing me :o

the problem is the layout of the rooms, halls, etc. you cant put a square peg in a round hole. I think they did the best they could, onsidering the facility. the way the rooms are layed out is horrible, I dont see how they could have made better use of the space.

the real problem is this is a big corp enitity with too many rules etc and that dosent lend itself to what we need as players. We need a player to build and design a spot for pool players. ;) Then alot of good things would fall into place.

Roy - great meeting you. A typical European (except for the French) as you are very pleasant. Hope you get your game with Sarah.

My early vote is for Richie Richeson for the Louie Roberts Award. Richie was in action every day I was there and handles himself well when in action. He would be a great representative for this award. Also, a side story (and I hope Richie or his friend doesn't mind me telling it) - late Saturday night/ early Sunday morning there was a drunk obnoxious kid in the action room and after about an hour of his antics, he was pretty much getting on everyone's nerves. Seemed like one of Richie's friends lost his patience first and basically threatened the drunk. Richie immediately told his friend 'Hey there is no fighting in here and that type of talk will end'. That to me showed great character by Richie to call his friend out in front of a group of people and immediately put an end to any chance of an incident.

Alrighty then. If you're so stinking smart, why don't you build something!!!

Thanks Watchez, nice meeting you too. Hope to meet you later during this week!

Yeah, I got my game against Sarah last night, and will probably play some more later this week. I won 9-5 and 9-6 in 10-ball, but I believe she intentially missed a lot of balls so I could earn some money to help cover my expensive flightticket ;)

I talked to Niels Feijen's lovely girlfriend, Katrine Jensen, about matching up with Sarah, and it looks like Sarah and her will match up tomorrow on the tar-table. Just some cheap sets, with Sarah giving up the 8 in 10-ball.

Nice playing vs Sarah Roy! Wow, Sarah vs Katrine. STREAM IT! Two very attractive women there with some game - it doesn't get much better!

Best line @ the DCC -

by Pots and Pans.

He walks up to this gal with large chest muscles and points to her pants and says - 'Can this be denim?'

Then he points to the sleeve of her shirt and says - 'Can this be cotton?'

Then he points to her chest and says - 'Can this be felt?'

(as told to me by I believe JCIN)

He uses it every year....

Best line I heard was...

A guy was -3 in 9 Ball banks and had 3 coins on the table. He just about scratches again and Jimmrayk says... "I think he is going to need change for a dollar"!

Roy is great, I hope to see him again here. If I can get out of my room, it aint looking good.

In addition to your project, the really crazy idea would be to get a group together and buy a casino eventually. If the economy tanks hard enough it might not be so farfetched. have a casino to run 24/7/365 and bring in maybe 4 huge events and have a full-time major pool room. Pool now may not be a big money maker, but buying somewhere cheap enough that would enjoy an influx of stay up all hours degens might work in a depression. Maybe not, but you never know.

I nearly spit all over my computer screen reading that

OK.... second best quote by him:

When asked how things were going..... he replied:

"Not so good...... I loaned a guy $1,000 to have some plastic surgery done.... and now I don't know what he looks like!"

We've all felt like that sometimes....
