My DCC trip, or what a friggin drag!

So, I'm sitting home with the rental car packed and ready to go, trying to figure out when to take off.....now, friday afternoon, or wait til saturday early? I was amped, so I hit the road about 4pm to start burning up the 666 miles my tomtom said it was the the DCC......I should have known!

After a less then eventful, yet friggid nite at the Comfort in Jeffersonville OH. I set out for the Derby early in no real hurry. The rental car is a sweet Dodge challenger with satelite radio....which for me is awsome because I could listen to Howard! and about a bajillion other stations......not to mention heated leather seats ROCK!...also, the USA gets real flat after you pass Pittsburgh :)

I figured I would ask at the desk about early check in.....no problem sir....here you go! nice....12pm early check in. After walking 13 miles from the hotel to the parking garage I re-parked the rental beast, and got my junk up to the room. The rooms are ok....not $140/ nite ok, but I'm at the DCC, so no bichin aloud.

What to do first?.....go get my players badge right? right....standing in line I met Lenny! he's a nice dude, and I wanted to meet up with him later to chat, but the gods had other ideas.

Next I just wandered around to get familiar with things. The layout is weird...little rooms with a few tables upstairs, the big tourney room on level1 with real good seating to watch above. I said hi to Grady, Freddie, Buddy Hall, all kinds of legends that didn't have a clue who I was :o

I got to the azb/1p room and met Jay, Mike, Ace, and a few other guys there. Cliff was there doing the challenge without much luck, and it was a general good afternoon into a nite of some beers, and me feeling strange for some reason? I went to bed early not feeling well at all.....I didnt have that many beers! :)

Sat morning I awoke feeling like a bus ran me over. I only had maybe 6 beers so it wasnt a hangover?.......crap....the flu! I got up in time to go to the 1p draw... I got David Cooper, I never heard of him, but thank god it wasnt a Pro :) I then went to my car and got my ball polisher I brought with on the trip. I left it at the AZB/1P room to keep things clean for the guys. Jay liked the polisher, so I am building him one, and shipping it out to CA.

ok, 2 hours til my match, time to go sit down and relax a while.....I woke up at 4:15pm....perfect for my 5pm match....uhhhh no! turns out my match was at 3pm and Mr Coooper got a freebee! I swear the board said 5pm!!!

I was bummed out, and figured I would go walk around. I made it to the challenge room, and I was sweating like crazy.....nasty fever! I tried to play a game, but it was worthless.....I'm sick, admit it and go to bed!

Monday morning brought more of the same....fever, shakes, sick as sick can be.....so I was on tilt to say the least. I have been waiting years to go to the DCC, and this is just lame! In my rage I packed it up and checked out....why waste money at 140 a nite being sick.

The ride home was uneventful for 670 miles...I went a different way home :)

then last nite.....food poisoning I think? or left over flu I am not sure....I never had it before and would not wish it on ANYONE! I'm good now, but from 3pm yesterday til about 4am this morning I was in agony.....wtf!

So, all in all....a drag, but I did make it there. I think what I am going to do is try to hit the Earl/SVB match to make up for it. We go to the SBE every year...its just down the road....maybe the US Open too!

it's just like looking forward to vacation and you have to work or something....very depressing!!!

Sorry to hear that. Bad luck with the timing. Sounds like everyone there is getting it. Must have sucked to have to drive 600 miles when you were so sick!

BRUTAL

Sorry about your luck, sounds like it could have been a blast if it weren't for the illness. Bad roll on missing your match too, it happens. All you can do is hope next year can be better. I have wanted to go to Derby, maybe next year for me too.

Wow, bummer, Ger.

Like you, I've been wanting to go to DCC since year 2. I seem to make most of the other events, but DCC is just a brutal time of year for my business.

One of these days, I hope to herd a couple of other guys and road trip to DCC. Someday, dammit.

Flu at DCC

i went in '07 and while not gettin it myself, about half the place did. too many people from too many places both here and abroad is a recipe for disaster. if i go again i'll be sure to fortify system before going and be fkn anal about washing and disinfecting while there. sorry your trip sucked

Gerry, was nice to meet you bud. Wish we could have got more time to hit some and hang out. My schedule was pretty grueling. Hope you feel better, the weather there was nasty.

What a bummer Gerry. The US Open before last I got food poisoning from a QMasters country fried steak. It sucks bad when you're at a special event and get sick.

Yo Lenny, btw, how did you fare in the DCC 1 hole tourney?

Duck City Classic

I got a room in Virginia Beach in Dec on the beach that regularly cost
180. Because it was the off season, it cost 35.00. So, when you goto the
DDC in the heart of Winter in an not too exotic place and pay 140.00 and then triple the price of entries that DDC started out being.(you see where I'm going) But, it's run by people who really love pool and the players!
Then, you get f....ed out of your match. Guaranteed, you read the chart right too. To me, it is now the Duck City Classic and if you choose to support it, by all means do so.

That sucks Gerry. At least you're gonna try to go to the Shane/Earl match. I think I'm going as well. My in-laws live about 45 min from there. I can get my yearly Pennsylvania trek out of the way and get to watch that at the same time. I hope to see you there. I met you in the AZ room, but I don't know if I told you my name (I was sitting in the corner talking to you when you were looking for your card).

Lenny, did you already leave? Guess we'll have to play some other time?

Sorry you had a bad trip; my experience was much better. This was my second time to DCC; went last year. I drove just over 450 miles from Atlanta; left at 10pm and got in around 5:30am. I parked on the ground level and was only a few minutes from the stairwell and made my way into the hotel. I’m not sure where you parked, but even when I left on Sunday (only played in the banks event) there was plenty of car parking near the stairwell. Anyway, just like last year, they let me check in at 5:45am. At first they said they were only smoking rooms available, but while checking in some drunk young kid starting barking something about his room. I let him vent, then after he was gone, she felt sorry about the incident and found be me a really nice room which was non-smoking. I checked in, attended the players meeting, and didn't have any issues with making it to a match since the format was changed to the time posted is when you play. Since I travel for work a ton, I always set my cell alarm and call the front desk to setup a wake up call, just in case. Also, my room was $99 a night; Friday and Saturday. I think I got a reduced rate since I had a players card?

For meals, the buffet was much better than last year since Paula Deen's influence on the menu. Granted the crab was not to die for on Friday night, but it was fun cracking them open. I would suggest hitting the buffet between 3-4pm since this is when they change the selection from lunch to dinner to get more variety. I think the venue is great. Ample viewing. Never had a hard time finding a seat to watch the main table. People moved around a lot, so there was always a better seat that opened up. From upstairs you could watch almost ten tables of action below. Granted, watching matches upstairs was not the greatest, but most of the better tourney matches were on the main floor. Didn't partake in watching any money matches this time. I really needed this trip to unwind and didn't stay up till 4, 5, 6am like last year watching the cash games. Another thing I liked, was the free coat check/pool case storage right next to the event. Instead of lugging it back and forth, you could leave it there till you next match. This worked out week, since I checked on Sunday and drove home Sunday night. Picked my case up with no issues. In short, I really enjoyed DCC 2011.

If work permits, I will try to go to the 9ball event next year, but having it start in the middle of the week is tough. Also, I regret that I didn't have a travel bud with me to the share the costs and watch the event. I did meet up with a work colleague Friday night and introduced to the world of professional pool; watching the bank ring game was a good immersion into the sport. Anyway, sorry you had a bad experience, but it sounds like the flu made it seem more than what it is.

Gerry;

I was looking forward to a good report at the end of your DCC. When you posted that you were going for the first time, I was sincerely excited for you.

Sorry to hear how things turned out.

I will be going to SBE and let's try to cross paths there and you will have a tall cold one on me.

Glad you are feeling better now.

Best,
Brian kc

Hey bud, I won my first 2 and lost my last 2, my last 2 matches were the day before I had to leave on the red eye flight so it was pointless for me even if I won my 3rd match which I could have as I had a good chance, just was not into it knowing I was leaving and could not continue on. Flight change was $500. :frown:

Brandon, I hope we can catch up again and hit some. This year was my first DCC and I will plan better next time so I can be there for the whole one pocket and get some cheap action with fellow AZB guys. :)

Good report, Gerry, but like you said: what a drag. I got the DCC Crud at the EW one year and was absolutely miserable.. I was even more miserable when I had to play Scott Frost thataway. But he took mercy and put me out of my misery with quick dispatch :-)

thnx for the kind words everyone. I even rented a car and drove out so I wouldn't get anything on the plane! :) didn't work out that way.I am trying to forget about the bad part and remember the cool parts.

I'm thinking I will play in the US Open this year. It has been about 18 years since I have gone to the Open, and it's only about 3 hours from me. I have never played in the SBE......not a bar table fan, but I did win one of the minis. I guess I should play there once in my life since its all of 40 minutes away! :)
