My first big (?) money game

I don't know that it would hurt to wager that much in the future, as long as you learned one more lesson. Which is...play to your strengths, as you did in the end by getting him at YOUR game, 14.1. Hell, you very rarely play 9-ball and don't care for the game...I don't blame you. I wouldn't either if I didn't have the unbreakable addiction.

D'maker,
Well, its a good point. I'm not a total basket case at 9-ball, I did run a 5-pack on him in the first set (my ball pocketing has taken a big step forward the last few weeks since Grady visited). I've studied the game, but my break is a weakness. I have a Break Rak, but haven't ever used it yet - maybe before DCC I'll start to work on it.

I definitely was surprised at how little thrill there was in winning that amount of money; I thought from all of the Color of Money quoters that it would be sweeter than money earned; but I didn't find it that big a deal. I definitely think that losing that much would have been a very sour experience (I've never lost more than $100, even at golf). I am NOT planning on gambling for that much again, unless its the only way I can trap Efren.

I'm really impressed with this story. Seriously, it takes a lot of nerve to do something like this and pull it off.

Now I know what I would have done if the guy tried to stiff me out of the 2 grand, but what would you have done if he said, "hey chick...take a hike or beat it out of me in the parking lot"? How would a female handle a situation like this?

If I would have turned to any of the guys sweatin it on the rail and told them the guy tried to stiff me, I guarantee you he wouldnt be using his legs to get out the door. As a general rule, the guys in the pool room look out for me. When I am on the road, I generally always have a male companion. Heck, the last one even carried a gun on him. I actually left him in Kentucky over that little fact. :)

hmmm..maybe I should said I wanted to play some instead of just asking where he was playing

Cubs-man,
I didn't mean to ignore you, this pesky day job continues to interfere with my pool addiction - I just post in the few little lag periods during work. I usually play at home; otherwise its at Airport Billiards or Chalkies (recently closed, but someone said has re-opened). The match was on the "jaws" table at Airport.

Lesson #1 - play a lot with better players. I am fortunate to play fairly often with some top pro's; it makes the run of the mill good players a lot less imposing.

Lesson #2 - I haven't found my choke point yet, in terms of dollars. I no longer get nervous in league play, even near the end of a long, close match. I no longer get nervous in local 9-ball tournament play. I still get NERVOUS AS HELL playing with a top touring pro, even though I consider them a friend - it's stupid and I need to get over it.

Lesson #3 - there's no need to avoid playing someone you don't know, just step up, have a little heart, but don't let it hurt you financially. If this guy would have been older I probably would not have played for that much - thinking he probably was OHB in disguise.

Lesson #4 - Money won is just the same as money earned - I got no great thrill from it - probably would have been just as pleased if we were playing for fun, it's cool being able to compete with good players. I'm not sure how I would have felt if I lost, probably bad, probably won't wager this much in the future.
Damn good lessons, IMHO.

I did hear that chalkies reopened again too. Haven't found out if it is actually true.

What was the place over on the west side by 10th street? Had a little diner called Manns just down the street. Been a long time since I've played in Indy. Used to play on a place on keystone and over by 10th or 16th streets on the west side.

If you guys are talking about Chalkies on 82nd St. it's deffinitely open. Just went there and played with some friends two Wednesdays ago. I've heard a lot about Airport Billiards. Might have to make an Indy roadtrip up there some time here soon.

Cub-man,
The place on Keystone is Executive Billiards, which I have not patronized - I hear you can always get a game; I'm waiting till my game gets a little stronger. I don't know the other place on the west side (I live on the extreme northeast side of Indy and only go to Airport because THAT'S WHERE THE STRAIGHT POOL IS!!!!!!).

Blonde Bomber,
Let me know the next time you are in Indy (or I'll try to let you know the next time I'm in B'town - I'll have 2 kids in school there this Fall). How is the pool club at IU - any interesting tourneys or activities? Are you interested in any exhibitions by any of the Indy pro's??

Alright cool. The pool club here at IU is on hiatus for the Summer. I think we are really going to try to promote it agressively next year. Maybe some exhibitions would help with that I don't know. I know we want to get people playing different games besides 8-ball, and we might organize a trip to the DCC (I know a few of us are going for sure since it falls conviently at the end of our X-mas break I think). The only thing we've really been doing is that me and a few of the guys I work with who are also members of the club started taking small roadtrips around Indiana to play different places. There is a great place just down the road from here in Columbus called Lag's. A real player's room and plenty of action if you want it too. I'm trying to sharpen my game up some more over this summer before I get in too deep.(Probably just a mid-to-high C player right now).

Bomber,
All sound like good idea's. If you have regular club meetings, you could try different games each week (like we do here in "Betmore's Basement"). Games we play regularly are Cowboy, Irish Billiards, 7-ball, Bowlliards, 99, Equal Offense, straights, 9-ball, one pocket, and only occasional 8-ball (haven't tried Golf yet). Depending on the size of your club you could play a round robin mini-tournament each week; with a different game each week.

Another interesting activity we do here (though closer to an exercise in futility than an actual contest) is set up a challenging layout from an Accu-Stats match; and let each contestant have a chance at running out (before they actually see the video). Then watch the pro do it successfully on the video - very, very interesting to see the different ways people will approach the same layout. Prizes for successful completion of the runout.

We also will compete at drills. Give everyone 5 minutes to try the drill, then everyone gets one chance at it for the prize - high score on the drill wins. You can keep track of the high scores during the year (do them periodically and you can track your improvement). You also can keep track of high scores in some of the games above (Cowboy, Equal Offense, Bowlliards, 99).

You could have a drill contest and a different competitive game contest each week, probably in less than 2 hours. If you need any help with any of these idea's, let me know; I'd be happy to share some details.
