My first DCC trip this year

hang-the-9

It turns out I have a work trip in Louisville on the 19tth. Coincides very nicely with DCC, I am going to take some time off and take a day or two to see things there. Do they allow table rentals for after the matches are over or do most players head to Railyard or someplace to shoot with their buddies? Who will be there? Feel free send me a message if you want to meet up and say Hi.

Looks like all the table seats are sold out, bleah.

It's changed over the years so I can't say with 100% accuracy how it'll be this year, but in the past most if not all of the non tournament play was done in the separate action area that requires additional admission. And not sure if you've checked on a map as to where the casino actually is. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere so I doubt many people go to Railyard. Google says it's a half hour drive. But that sounds pretty ambitious unless there's no traffic at all.

Having said that, enjoy your time at The Derby. It's a hoot.

I may only be there for half of one day, on the 22nd. I looked at the schedule and the 9 ball does not start till the 22nd. I have no real interest in the banks or one pocket matches. I am flying out on the 23rd.

You're gonna wish you had more time, particularly since this will be your first time there. It's pretty cool to just stand there for a few seconds and take in the fact that you're in the center of the pool universe at that very moment.

After tournament play is over, they lock the tables to coin op play. $1/game IIRC. There is a room dedicated to coin op non-tournament play, and an action room or two.

There is also a 10 ball tournament that starts on the first Friday, which fills in the boredom from the banks tournament. It is played on the 10 foot TV table.

If you are there for just half a day, use it to check out the entire scene, meaning the tournament rooms (downstairs and upstairs), the main action room, and the one table action room run by Ray "Big Truck" Hansen. The 10ball event will probably be finished before you arrive.

I arrive on Monday 20th, but will not be able to go there till the evening Monday or Tuesday. I am planning on either taking Wed off or doing a half day to head to DCC then.

As someone mentioned, the casino is pretty far from, well, anything!! Make sure to give yourself a little extra travel time to get there.

One tip I would add is to eat before you go. There is food available but you are going to want to spend your time taking in the event.

So, I assumed since the event is "Derby City" Classic, it's in Louisville, or at least Kentucky. It's actually in Indiana???!! LOL I know Indiana is really close to Louisville (one day I had lunch in Indiana, by accident LOL), but still.

The bridge location is also interesting, from the Louisville airport it can be a 10 min drive instead of 30.

The event used to be held at the Executive West hotel (now the Crowne Plaza) in Louisville but moved to the Caesars Casino in Elizabeth, Indiana (in 2009?).

From Louisville airport the trip shouldn't be too long but give yourself some extra time. The "spaghetti junction" area where you would access I-64 West can be confusing. Watch the road signs closely. The traffic in that area is almost always heavy. Lots of semi-truck traffic also.

There was no use for a bridge to that part of Indiana, so none was built. Seriously rural.

Are you staying near the airport?
There has been talk of adding a ferry to shuttle people back and forth. But political issues of building something in Louisville to support an Indiana business make it problematic.

If you've never been to Louisville before then a couple of things to try and see are:

Churchill Downs (home of the Kentucky Derby horse race):
Churchill Downs, 700 Central Ave, Louisville, KY 40208

Fort Knox:
United States Bullion Depository, 397 Redmar Blvd, Fort Knox, KY 40121

Churchill Downs is strange - it's just south of downtown and the area around it is not that glamourous at all. There's a Barbaro (famous horse) statue outside where you can get your pic taken. Been there. Done it kinda thing.

Fort Knox - we all say stuff like 'man - that's like trying to get into Fort Knox'. How many people really know where it is - or have actually seen it?
It's a bit out of town but if you have a car - easy to get to.

Yeahh.. I am sure "the casino" HAS been discussing this. Other than that.. I can't see anyone else being interested in something that basically mostly benefits ONE business. For the gambling, the move to the casino was one of the worst things ever. There's still gambling, but there used to be 3x the action at the Executive West. Literally any other big hotel in Louisville would be better. Diamond Billiards made a deal with the casino, and we've suffered for it for years. Bad food options.. 20-30 minutes from even the closest shopping options. Inflated rooms costs due to having a pretty much completely captive customer base for those 10 days. Add onto all that how terribly the tournament is actually run, and the lack of reporting to Fargorate, and I think I am done for a few years, unless I come into some money.

All in, going to DCC while it is still at that casino adds about 1.5K to 2K or so more to the trip as compared to literally almost any other area in the U.S. when you factor in inflated room prices and super expensive food options.. I am thinking watching some gambling is not worth the extra cost, and outside of that, the International Open in Florida is better (for me) in nearly all respects. Better accommodations, at least the "choice" of staying at another hotel... Better weather.. You can take a day once you are out of the event to visit Florida things within an hour or two's drive.. An amateur event limited to 650 Fargorate... Still the opportunity to watch the main event.. Plenty of side events, and Fargorate reporting of full match scores...

Opry mills convention center is the prime location ! Ten minutes from downtown Nashville. Food. Food. Food. Move it! Everybody hates that venue except Greg and the casino.

Louisville in general is a dumpster fire!
