My first "Valley Forge" experience. (long post)

Just thought I'd share some of my experiences and observations of the past few days. Great way to kill time before my favorite TV show starts!

I got to VF on Friday night around 09:30, and was immediately struck by the size of the convention center. I have heard many accounts of VF over the years, but this place is absolutely huge. I liked the way they had the tournaments well spread out and between levels, and I thought charging separately for the pro and amateur tournaments was a good move too. I say this because there is a lot of wandering around, aka free roaming in this place, and some areas (besides the pit and challenge tables) could easily become overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people.

The food was about what I expected...and yes...I indulged in one of those funnel cakes! I thought it was a great idea that they served alcohol too, and there was a decent supply of quick eats. Even if they did not have food at the place there are so many decent restaurants close by you could easily leave for a meal and not miss much.

I was also pleasantly suprised by the number of booths / vendors present. If you can't find what you need at one of these Expos, you simply aren't trying hard enough! I am accustomed to the US Open in Chesapeake, VA, which has about one quarter the # of vendors of VF...but to be fair the convention center is so huge the vendors have a *lot* more room to setup, etc.

What I liked best about VF was the diversity of pool choices available.
There are several amateur tournaments, second-chance tournaments, juniors, seniors, pro-am, minis...you name it. And if action is your thing...the pit is there, along with a more-than-healthy supply of gambling / side bets going on. This place easily gave Cuemasters in VA a run for its money, at least from what I saw. And let's not forget the autographing / photo opps with some of the pros...and let's throw in the artistic competition to round it off!

There was no 1P...but I didn't mind...there was more than enough action to satiate! I left on Sunday at 4:30pm, and did not go to bed before 5:00 a.m. on any night!

Regarding the action, here is what I saw and heard while there. Please keep in mind I only heard this while there, and while I did watch some of the matches, I did not ask the players involved or their backers the exact details of each. I only get to that level of involvement if I am playing or my money is on the table...otherwise it isn't any of my business...:) So, don't slam me if I don't have every detail right.

Shane Van Boening vs. Pam Treadway
He was giving her the 5-out and the snaps in 10-ball. They were playing a head set, got back to even and then quit. Rumor has it she couldn't keep breaking because her stomach hurt (she had given birth to what I believe was her 2nd child only two or three days before) and Shane and crew did not agree to it. Later that night she played someone else, or maybe her new husband did, and lost.

Hennessy vs. Hatch
I saw the very end of this. They were racing to 15 and Hennessy was getting the last two. He played safe on the four, Hatch hit it and left Hennessy a table length stop shot. Well, Hennessy got lucky by missing the four in the bottom right corner and having it bank it in the top right. And to add pain, the CB stopped perfectly to play a combo on the 10-ball in the side for the win!

Pooky vs. Mark Painter
I believe they were playing a head set for a dime or more, not sure who won.

Jeanette Lee vs. the mysterious Puerto-Rican (twice)
I saw other posts on this so won't go into too many details...only to say it was my 1st. experience watching a female pro gamble for big money. I saw Yu Rum Cha (sp?) give Rachel Abbink the 7 in a race to 11 in 10-ball for a dime at last year's US Open, which was very cool. Jeannette conducted herself in the manner you would expect from a classy pro that has made a name for herself on the global stage. She was fun to watch, and I left before her second match was over, so I don't know who won. I just thought it was cool to be playing for 20 dimes, sign autographs, play the music you want to hear on your CD player at *your* booth, while your husband racked for you!

"Scooter"
This was my first exposure to this young man. I have been around pool for quite some time (over two decades) and have never seen anyone talk up action like this kid! And he was funny on occasion. Love him or hate him, he commands attention, and can easily control the tempo of a gambling situation. It was quite entertaining...even more so when Mark Painter got involved, and he can woof it up like no other I've seen. Scooter's buddies ran around the pool room all night and morning, constantly trying to get action started. Sometimes it was obnoxious, but mostly it was entertaining. One guy kept spitting chewing tobacco into his soda bottle, which was despicable, but...I am amongst pool players...so what can you do?

The challenge tables were interesting but there were too many people on the lists so I didn't bother.

I got into some light action myself and ended up breaking even so all in all it was a decent pool weekend for me.

Will definitely be back next year!

Just a lil help here, buddy:

It's Mike Painter, not Mark. Mike n Pooky played 8 ahead for 1500.
Hatch wuz giving Hennessee the 9 and the last two.
Pam's husband Vinnie played Scooter a race to 7 for a dime, n Vinnie got highjacked.
Pam played a young boy named John Aliecea from Jersey...She won.

You forgot to say that Painter won over Pookster! ;)

Sorry, Pookster. I know you post on this forum now! :p

Hope you had a great time, Frankie! Sounds like this year was packed with all kinds of fun activities.

My first VF experience also. I'll have to say, its probably my last. I saw Painter playing cheap stuff, $40/gm winner stays. The guy can play, but he can woof even better. Always jawin on someone.

The folks betting in the audience were as lame as could be. Odds to most were something that wasn't even. One time of "I'll take the breaker for $20" was enough to convince me that most of these goofs didn't want to work for the money. This young kid showed up, I capped him at the 5 ball against the break. Sure enough, Mr. I'll take the breaker wouldn't go for it. The kid runs to the 5, misses on the 6. I think I'll stick to horse racing. Even with the cheating, its easier than this.

Another observation. So many good cues, so few dollars to buy them. Even if you had the cash, you seriously have to question why you'd need one to play with, aside from collecting.

Went there loving the Tiger ultra. After playing with them all, the Mezz was definitely not my fav, the OB-2 wasn't bad...definitely stiffer, actually liked the Poison shafts.

Overall, I was amazed at the level of play, especially the amatuers. The pro's tournament setting wasn't the best I've ever seen.

If you were wheeling and dealing cues, great place. If not, there was some stuff, but I would rather see APA and TAP do their championships side by side, moving this whole shindig to a bigger facility and making them the focus of the show.

Thanks for the post. I am bummed I have to wait another year for this event again. I always have the first day of the SBE in my calendar and look forward to it more than any other event of the year.

Who won in the match you mentioned with Rachel and Cha?
That was at last year's Open and I am pretty sure Cha won. Of course I was bouncing around so much between tables I couldn't say with 100% certainty...although from what I saw of the match it didn't look like Rachel had a chance.

Nice post!
Now we need pictures.:grin-square:

The event organizers really need a pat on the back for all they do. This is an amazing event with sooooo much coordination going on.

I used to help co the the largest Construction Expo in GA every year. Aaaahhhh , I don't miss the set up. After months of organizing and 1 week of prep and 1 week of running it I fell to my bed unable to move! haha All the times we put on the show I never got to "attend". Everyone was having fun and running around except the crew. If you are near GA... get permission and go, it is so worth it. Go to or call ...CEFGA.org (closed/moderated event because of the high school kids and state competitors and judges...SkillsUSA) In mid-April.

Mike tells me about the Billiards Expo every year... I so want to go. Every cue maker, table make, light maker... anyone who is anyone is there. Pull out the red carpet here comes the AZBers... There were more AZBers there this year than anyother. I don't have a final count but would be nice to know. This is like going to DisneyWorld for AZBers....LOL.

The "steam" viewers topped out at 700 plus! We need pictures. Post them up ...can't wait to see!:p

I live for this tourney every year and I'm lucky enough to live only 30 minutes away. Already counting down the days till next year!

I loved this venue! It was my first time too and I thought it was a wonderful event, organized, fun and chill. The people there are great too....lots of cool people from all over the place.

Great Pre-Vegas Trip!

Also my first time going and I had a great time! Allen Hopkins definitely puts on quite an event. I got to brush shoulders with a ton of the world's best cuemakers, see the most incredible cues, hang with the pros (including my hero Souquet), hit some challenge matches and watch some awesome matches and just marinate in everything pool. All the vendors were very nice and sure showed a lot of energy and enthusiasm putting up with the long days and big crowds. We also went down to South Philly for cheesesteaks which I'm already craving another.

I mostly hung out with the guys from the WesternCue booth. Kent Davis, Martin (Jazznpool), Kenny Koo (Flyingsnail) put out some amazing cues and spent their entire time answering questions and sharing their knowledge with the fans. Especially cool that Paul Drexler was at the booth showing some of his incredible work and fielding questions too! And the visit from Barry Szamboti, the Tascarellas, and Dennis Searing wasn't bad either.

Was nice meeting the entire gang at the Carolina Cues booth and a bunch of AZ'ers too. Lot of laughs for sure!

I didn't buy too much but I sure did want to. Next year.. I'll be better prepared! I picked up a Keith Josey full splice cue from him. What a super nice family.

P.S. Friday night, on the table next to me was Scooter and SVB playing for what I think was $300/game. SVB was just NOT missing. Period.

Did any of you go up and give Mike and Jerry a hard time? :grin-square:
Was it your first time meeting either of them?
What Pro players did you meet?
We NEEDS pictures!!!

I did give Crown City Corey a hard time. Got to bs with Jennifer Baretta who was very nice. Sammy Diep, my hero Ralf Souquet, SVB, Rodney Morris, Sarah Rousey, Marcus Shamat, Corey Deuel, Charlie Williams, Jeanette Lee, and Allison Fischer who was also super nice and spent quite awhile talking to fans and signing autographs. There were other sponsored pros playing challenge matches but I didn't get all their names. A lot of cuties beating up on the guys. hehe.

Here's a pic of the upstairs tourney tables:
