My Linds Custom Cue review...

Backgrounder:
An EPT friend (Macky Ochoa) was selling this cue and I bought it. I didn't like it at first as it had a 12mm tip, was heavy at 19.4oz and back balanced at 18.25". I took out the bumper and can see that there is a weightbolt. Took it out and the cue went down in weight to 18.40oz. It feels much better after that small thinkering. After a couple more racks, I'm still not satisfied with the soft whimpy hit. The shaft vibrates like crazy when english is applied. I then got my Albrecht shaft, lou and behold, this baby can hit better. So, this thing knows how to shoot finally. I then contacted Linds to have this baby resurrected. So, off I go on one of my trips to Manila and I handed it back to Linds to have undergo a major surgery. Here it looks now after that major operation. :)

Look at the stunning BEM Forearm...

Woods:
Forearm: BEM
Handle: Rosewood
Butt: BEM

Specs:
Pin: SS 3/8x10
Lenght: 58.25" (Shafts: 29", Butt: 29.25")

Weight: 18.30oz (Shaft1: 3.30oz, Butt: 15.00oz)
Tip: SuperPro
Ferrule: 0.70" Mahjong

Shaft2: 19.20oz (Shaft2: 4.20oz)
Tip: SuperPro
Ferrule: 0.70" Cueball

Diameter:
Shaft1: 12.20mm, 21.70mm (0.480", 0.855")
Shaft2: 13.25mm, 21.65mm (0.521", 0.852")
Butt: 21.70mm, 32.25mm (0.855", 1.270")

Woods:
The BEM has those tinny-winny eyes and are well spread. It's totally different from other BEM that I've seen and I love it. The grains on the Rosewood is tight and well defined. This is a thing of beauty and the very reason why I took this cue in the first place.

Playability:
As stated above, the original way this cue hits' was not to my liking. It was whimpy, soft with that long filipino taper that starts at 12mm. A few modifications (took the weightbolt out) and a brand new shaft (Bowling Alley special) make this baby hit the way I like it. Solid, firm and crisp with a nice tong(higher pitch) sound that is pleasing to hear. The feedback is amazing. I attribute that to the way this cue in constructed and the tight-grained Rosewood handle. I have been shooting with this cue for 2 weeks now and I know how this cue plays.

Lastly, my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Linds for doing the much needed modifications to this cue. Thank you very much Linds.

That is wicked birdseye! I love the small, tight eyes on a forearm.

What did you end up doing with the old shaft btw?

i hear they don't use seasoned shaft wood in cues made in the Philippines
Mr Linds' bowling alley shafts are decades old. They must be seasoned by now.

If those shafts are not good shaft wood, you'll NEVER hear anything from me. Even the original shaft is very good shaft wood, just not fit for my style of play.

As what he indicated in his first post, it was due to the long taper of the shaft. Nothing to do with the shaft wood.

The way I read it is the first shaft was seemingly nice wood, but had a noodle taper that virtually ruined it for his preference. He had a second shaft made thicker & stiffer, likely from the same wood but he never said, and now it hits the way he likes.

That's a badass piece of rosewood, BTW. Birdseye is ok, too :) Linds is unarguably one of the best filipino builders, certainly not one of the ebay specialists.

Just to make it clear and I think I was very clear. It was the shaft that was whimpy, whimpy for my taste. Many a filipino will like this taper. Ask Efren when you see him and also look at his shaft and look at the taper. :)

Joeyincali says he uses a filipino taper (probably not the same as the one that this cue came with) that goes to 12mm and hits stiffer than a 13mm pro taper.

i doubt i'll ever see Efren

It looks good, it also hits good. It will be a plus if it were Brazilian. Linds can confirm it.

:D :D :D I know the history of this cue and what the previous owner likes. Plus Linds knows what an Efren taper is. He can chime in if he wants. ;)
