My New Mason Cue!(Pics Added)
It was just delivered last Thursday and I had my first chance to hit with it on Sunday. I played 14.1 for about three hours.
Fit and finish are excellent, ringwork is beautiful, shafts are gorgeous. My cue is African Blackwood forearm and butt with staghorn buttcap and moose joint and joint collars with a black kangaroo leather wrap.
I played with Jazz's Blackwood Mason cue about six months ago and that was the first time I hit with African Blackwood. I liked it a lot and was lucky enough to get on Mason's list and had him make me a similar cue.
The cue imparts amazing velocity to the cueball and object balls. It has Kamui hard tips, a stiff taper (13.1mm shafts) and the shorter yellow micarta ferrules that Mason uses. I made some firm breakshots playing 14.1 the the collision literally cracked like a rifle shot. I am not kidding. I wanted a hard hitter with a stiff taper and man, I got it. Blackwood plays very much crisper in my opinion than ebony. I have a few ebony cues, and none of them hit with this type of sound or feel. Ebony seems much more muted and has less feedback than Blackwood to me. Maybe it is the resonance, as Blackwood is used for musical instruments such as clarinets and oboes. Anyway, the sound is unbelievable. Cueball control is great and took little adjustment.
This cue has an exceptional hit and is extremely well made. I ran 29 balls (good for me) yesterday on the very first outing with the cue. I am going to play with this bad boy for the time being. I will post some pictures in the cue gallery as soon as I take some.
Thanks, Mason, for a job well done and a great cue!
