my simonis.. does play like simonis. help

i have simonis 860 on an 8 ft table.. when we put it on we stretched it as tight as we could.. its not loose at all.. anyway it doesnt roll very fast at all.. the only time it rolls fast is right after i polish the balls.. but in order for it to play right i would have to repolish the balls every 20 minutes.. can you guys help me did somthing go wrong?? is there something i can put on the table to make it faster?? thanks

My two thoughts are (1) that the cloth is upside down; (2) you didn't use a cloth stretcher to do the job, you just used your hands.

the cloth isnt upside down, there were stickers on it to tell you the top side. we took plyers and stretched it as good as we could without it tearing. its weird cause it only plays fast when the balls were JUST cleaned

1. Simonis has the logo stamped continuously on the edge. Make sure you have genuine Simonis.
2. If the ball set is polyester you will definitly notice a difference by going to a resin set by aramith.
3. I presume the table is real slate as opposed to slatec, slateron or plywood which would affect the ball roll.
 
Sounds like you need a new set of balls. your rails could be slow to is a possible thing.
 
This is probably a stupid thought but, could the humidity level in the room be high?? If the balls play OK after cleaning would they then pick up humidity from the cloth or air and slow down??

Humidity has a lot to do with the speed. I personally opted for the 760 on my table as it plays more like the worn 860 in most rooms.

im a dumba$$ i live in florida thats what i was going to originally do but the people here talked me out of it. im sure the humidity is the problem now.. thanks guys.. im restretching my felt right now because over the past 2 months it got loose.. damn humidity.. just a stupid question. i heard that to help fihgt the humidity to just VERRY lightly mist cold water on the felt before i go to bed each night?? think its a good thing to do? i havent done it yet but was just curious. thanks guys
 
Hmm, Ive heard the term fight fire with fire, but never humidity with water :(

If you can insulate the room and purchase a few dehumidifiers or A/C units, that may help. Of course a few hundred gets you into the 760 also which has a lower wool content and will play faster.
 
upside down

Is the cloth fuzzy? If it is fuzzy then you put it on upside down. I don't care if there were stickers or not. If it is fuzzy and doesn't look totally smooth you have it upside down. Simmonis shaves the playing side so that it is smooth!!!! I know from experience!

Anyway, I also suspect it is humidity-related, but I'm hesitant to recommend anything since the cloth
is so expensive. Putting a mist of water on the cloth seems counterproductive to me, but maybe some
cloth experts will be forthcoming. I'm using some cloth that was designed for wool suits after
reading that they are very similar. In order to get it to play faster, I have used a little spray starch and
ironing. I can't remember where I read about that, but it was most likely on this board. I look forward
to hearing from some experts, and I hope you are able to achieve your goals.
 
what is normal humidity? Im going to be putting in a table soon, in my basement but its 1/2 above ground, so it doesnt seem humid to me down there. I was thinking about goin 760 so it would play like 860 in humid too.
 
Humidity can contribute to slow rolling cloth but I doubt to the extent of having to polish a ball set as you mentioned every 20 minutes. Is the table IN a house that is temperature controlled? My brother is in Ft Lauderdale and has no problem with his table and they keep the temp at 74 with about 60% humidity. You can buy an inexpensive gauge at your local home center to check the temp/humidity. Misting water on the cloth is not recommended in any situation but making sure the cloth is tight is.

Humidity above 70% is considered humid. Between 50% and 70% is normal. If the humidity is too high it won't make much difference which cloth you use.
 
More info

I also practice in a damp basement. Mostly with just the cue ball and one object ball. I need to
wipe off both balls (no jokes please) about every 15 minutes or so, so I think you will find that
the humidity level in your room will be much higher than you ever expected.
