My Take on Speed Pool

Speed pool is fun....we used to do this as kids and time it to see who was fastest.....it broke up the boredom of other games and just another form of practice....it's a challenge, just like trick shots, 9-ball, straight, or any other game....

Gawd, let it go people....any pool on TV is better than no pool on TV....

Like golf, we need a pool channel :D

I think I've seen more pool on The Golf Channel than I have on most channels (excluding ESPN Classic of course)....Charles Barkley vs. Hank Haney - not exactly Van Boening vs. Efren, but hey, it was on tv. lol :p

I find it pretty dull, as do most serious players. Nonetheless, any pool on TV is a good thing, and if speed pool (and trick shot magic) get better ratings than regular tournament pool ---- well that matters. Still, I wonder whether non-pool people watching speed pool (or trick shot magic) are inspired enough by what they are watching to try the game.

Damn sjm, I've been thinking about at my new room having Saturday-night midnight scotch doubles speed-pool double elimination tournaments, where the two teams spar off head-to-head with an empty table between them, and everybody else hoots and hollers from the sidelines.. Sounds like a blast to me...

but even if I don't do that,

Inspired enough to try the game is a pretty tall order. I would say speed pool is baby steps at best, and the issue is whether it's baby steps forward or backwards.

My sense is it's good rather than bad.

It just seems like good simple fun, and nobody is going to mistake it for real pool (even if they don't know what real pool is all about) anymore than someone is going to mistake a game of HORSE for basketball.

If they're deciding whether to air speed pool or a rock-paper-scissors tournament, I hope they choose speed pool.

Let me put this in language you can understand. I'm calling you a liar. You can't break two minutes and I doubt you could break three. I'm willing to back it up with cash. You?

A LIAR?? Show me where I said I could break two minutes, if you can read. I'm real sure I can break three. Bet?? How about a bet you can't run 5 racks of 9-ball? Your original post stated "Even so, I curious (sic) what others think. So I told you what I think. Frankly, I don't care if you like it or not, if you agree or not, or if you can understand my opinion or not. Peace out, unless you want a bet.
:p

Nothing in pool and billiards is more comedic than speed pool. Cheesy poofs, Corvette?

No offence to anyone. It's just not my cup of tea.

It mocks everything that makes pool the great game it is. It's like watching a baseball game in fast foward. It doesn't make sence. It tells you what the network thinks of pool. Their only concern is how they can fit it in, in an hour.

You're exactly right, IMO. Imagine speed poker or speed golf!!

Don't be so sure, Mike. Not so long ago ESPN broadcast a game just like HORSE on a carom table, marketed it as three-cushion billiards, and a good many people on this forum bought it.
