My Viking Amateur experience!!

I tip my hat to all parties involved for handling this situation with class and professionalism. To Drake for understanding rules are rules and to MJ knowing some rules can be slightly bent (letting him finish 3rd).

Tap, Tap!

Mike

Todd it's ashamed that had to happened to you that way, because as someone already stated, you're a class act! But so is Mike, and if you were still playing the way you were in 03, you would be far to good for the amateur events! I played you in Tommy's event in Douglas, at Stix n Stones, you rarely missed back then! I'm sure you'll get back up to speed, and you'll be a force in the open events!

Drake, as I mentioned in our PM's the rules are the rules. You are not the only player that has been disqualified in this manner. Tim Orange was disqualified in the middle of his match in Atlanta on Dec 30th.

As I state in the beginning of the event with my announcements.

NO PLAYER THAT HAS EVER WON AN OPEN EVENT (that I can prove through reported results) will be allowed to participate in the Amateur Division. If during the event I find out you have won and open event or you are playing under a false name you will be barred from any future participation on the Viking Tour.
OVER 15 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BARRED IN THE LAST 4 YEARS.

I hope you make it to our Open events in the future.

Mj

I am confused - is he barred from the Viking tour as the rule states or is he allowed to play in Open events ?

Watchez, I do reserve the latter of the 2 penalties for the most extreme cases. He is not barred from the open events but definately barred from the all future Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour Amateur events.

Before you ask. The rules are the rules.....etc,..etc.. As with anyone that is in a position to uphold rules and administer penalties/punishment I have thought about this to a great extent. I reserve the latter of the 2 rules (Barred from all Viking Tour events and/or NO Payment) for the persons that have showed malice (people that did it on purpose). I have encountered all of the situations before and for this particular case I believe the penalty fits and nothing more needed to be done.

As far as Todd Drake is concerned, he understood why and how this happened and it is also my understanding that he did not intentionally try to manipulate the rules. That's it and its over and done with.

Todd was unaware of the stipulations for the event, and I think therefore no future actions should or will be taken(this is just what I gathered, but obviously MJ is the one who will really answer that, but it would be a shame, cause Todd is truly an asset to any event).-Matt

Mike, I must have been out having a cigarette while you announced the OPEN requirements. I was not aware of that I could not play.....even tho my skill level is below some of the players in the amateur event!!

I blame this whole thing on smoking. :P

ban smoking???

So, it sounds like the right answer is to ban smoking from all future Viking "Amatuer Events"...:D

Just kidding -- just kidding -- just kidding...

I have to agree with the forfeit and move on. I think you should consider yourself lucky Mike let you keep your third place.

Mike is a very fair guy and does his best to keep tournaments as fair as possible. I would trust and respect his call at any time. It's tough to draw the lines and he does the best job of it than any TD i've ever played with.

Great answer and an honest one. As Mike said before, Tim Orange was also disqualified previously from an Amatuer event. I don't think Tim or Todd did this intentionally. In both tournaments, niether were the favorite to win the Amateur division. I believe Mike showed no favoritism here and handled the situation very fairly. He has not banned Todd nor Tim from participating in any future OPEN events.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me.

FWIW, I do agree with you exiting this player from this tournament. I might have even been more harsh & just returned his entry fee & moved everyone behind him up a spot. The 1st & 2nd place finishers benefited from your awareness to his status but the players previously knocked out were still effected by his play in the tournament, against the rules. Also, as the police say - ignorance is no excuse. Just because Todd didn't know the rules or played illegally unintentionally, doesn't make it right in any way.

The fact that Todd won matches hill-hill or if he had won by shutout makes no difference. You are either eligible or not.

O.K. no one wants to tell the old man who won!!! i am cutting all out of the "WILL"%#%&*(*(&*& STICK

Thanks 2 everyone

I just wanted to take the time and thank everyone for the positve responses about my character........"Class Act" and "Benefit to the tournament". I made up my mind many years ago to always tell the truth and play 100%.....even if does cost me money in the long run. Pool is rampant with thiefs and liars who double steer. This the VIRUS that I personally feel keeps pool down.

Mike made a fair judgement call in the heat of the moment at a very late stage of the tournment. I only feel that he chose to give me 3rd place money due to my quality of play. Every opponent will tell you they should have beaten me except one.....a female who just started playing and got in for free. I just wish I would have been able to finish playing the tourney...... EVEN if I only got paid 3rd place money...... I love competition and would have loved to say I won the tourney or got beaten up in the finals.

Once again, Thanks for all of the compliments.
