I guess I am spoiled out West. I never paid more than $6 /hr for play and I thought that was too rediculously high and refuse to play there any longer. Most places in Denver were between $3.50 /hr and 5.00 hr. How can avid players afford to spend hours on a table in Jersey. They must be rich. We had all day specials in Denver for $3.00 all day just to get warm bodies in during the day. Good luck with your new room.

New Jersey has the highest cost of living.
New Jersey has the highest cost of auto insurance.
New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation.

Those are just some of the reasons rates are so high here in the Garden State.:(

I live in central New Jersey. The cost of an hour of pool is around $7.50 to $8.00. The cost of rent is also very high. Even at these rates I don't know how a room owner stays in business. If a room owner doesn't sell beer I don't believe the place will last very long.
Every place around here offers flat rate specials. $10 for a few hours. There is a place in Northern Jersey called Comet billiards. They hold a lot of pro tournaments there like Joss Notheast and Predator 9 ball. They have a monthly practice special. I think it is something like $50 and practice all you want by yourself for the month. If I lived closer to them I would take this.

Hi and wish you all the best. I speak with many room owners around the country and have heard some of the issue they are facing with the economy being as tough as it is right now. It seems to me the room owners who are doing the best are searching for low cost or no cost benefits they can offer their clients / customers that entices them into their room.

It's all about value. Such as those with kitchens offering half price lunch with an hour pool or one room owner was telling me about how he is offering a "membership" to anyone interested. Instead of paying by the hour, they have a monthly membership fee, where depending on the membership level, depends on whether they pay zero or discounted by the hour green fees. I thought that was a pretty creative idea and also seems like a win-win. The players who need or want to play / practice the most get a break and the owner / manangement benefits by developing player loyalty and consistancy of attendence. Pool players, for the most part, are :) herd oriented (it may not always seem that way but...). Players will gravitate where other players can be found ;)
