Myth or real - Stroke smoothness as a requisite for certain shots

To attempt to answer the question the OP actually asked:

If you ignore consistency / likelihood of making the shot (ie what actually matters!) there are probably very few shots that are impossible to make with a 'poor' stroke (in the same way as it is not impossible for an infinite number of monkeys to come up with the complete works of Shakespeare). At least I cannot think of a scientific reason why this should be an impossibility

The only exception that I can think of is certain power shots. Here, in order to generate the sort of controlled power that is needed, the stroke must be played using an autonomous, open-loop, control mode. Loosely speaking, this allows the agonistic and antagonistic muscle groups to be applied sequentially (accelerate first and then brake) rather than concurrently (one foot on the accelerator, the other at the same time on the brake).

The former mode is both more efficient and effective and is used by experts performing practiced skills where variability is constrained; the latter mode is more adaptable and is the default mode for most motor actions. Again loosely speaking, the smooth-stroking expert uses this autonomous mode, which because of the efficiency, can be very powerful; in contrast the action of the novice is more closed-loop, and unable to generate the power needed.

Can't think of any other examples though.

This is the first description of actual "timing" I've seen here. lol. Personalized timing and anticipatory histrionics are what the (non) argument is about. These superfluous actions are the filing system of the player.
