Need a quick answer or info please!!!

I have a friend who is going to buy an old Joss cue. The cue has JOSS written on the butt cap.

Is this older than a sideways Jw?

What year would this cue been made?

What would you estimate it worth in average condition?

He just called me and described the cue, he is going to keep it as its a friend of his fathers who passed away.

Any info would be a great help, so that I may relay it back to him.

thanks

lawman888...No, the Joss you're talking about is not older than the the ones with the sideways W on the J. They are two different cuemakers. The JW is the old logo for Josswest, made by Bill Stroud (now in NM). The Joss cues are made by Danny Janes (out of Baltimore). I don't think he inscribed the JOSS on the butt caps until later on (early 90's IIRC). The Josswest cues, with the J and sideways W are from 70's and 80's. Can't help you on the value without pictures. You could probably check the Blue Book of Cues, for a value, but the people here will have a better idea. The cue market is down right now, so nothing is selling high. Hope this helps you.

hey thanks! any info helps. My friend is convinced that his is before Jw. WHen they were still together. It has JOSS written in a weird block style. This cue doesnt appear to be made in the 80'saccording to him. He believes it to be wayyyyyy older.

I dont have my blue book handy but if anyone does,, it is in the first edition and they have that style lettering in there because I have seen it.

any more info??
thanks

Be the boss with a Joss

I have a '68 and a '71 Joss with the logo on the butt plate.
Danny Janes and Bill Stroud were partners then.Bill later went on
his own-hence Joss West-.JW's are more collectible because he
stayed custom.Tim Scruggs and possiblyBob Frye were also involved
with the early Joss.
I wouldn't take a new car for my '68 Joss.
or even a house.......uh,how many bedrooms did you say?

pt109...I was unaware that Dan Janes put the block letter JOSS logo on his older cues. I've never seen an older cue with that on it. The early cues that came out of Dan & Bill's shop had no logo, IIRC. I will tell you, that by 1971, Bill and Dan had split up, and Bill was living in Aspen, CO. I know, because I visited him there, while I was attending college in Gunnison, CO. All of his cues then had the J with the sideways W. Dan occassionally posts here. Maybe he will clear up the confusion.

Scott.

Just checked my '68 Joss. Also have '86 with logo on butt collar.
Although the lettering is different they both look 'blockish' to me.
I have seen the later logo on butt plate also,so i'm confused.
A picture of the cue in question would clear this up,so i hope
the original poster will show it.
ps - thanks for making me think

This sounds like the cues that they made before Dan Janes and Bill Stroud split up. The cues were made between '68 and '71. If you could post a picture of the JOSS logo, I could tell you for sure. Dan Janes did also use the JOSS logo on his cues after he split up but it was with a completely different logo.

The older logo was larger and in a block letter format.

I have an original Joss from 69 and mine has no markings on it. I thought they were all made like this. I didn't know they used the JOSS lettering then.

Do a search on this forum for "block letter joss".

I know howardthedick has a few of them...

YEs , thanks everyone!! It was an older one that was made before the sideways Jw, before the split.

Came with a nice fellini case:eek:

Not mine so NFS before anyone asks lol

I appreciate all the responses Merry Christmas

I had the one on the left at Joss recently, Dan dated it around 1975....The one on the right is blocked very similar. Not sure about it. But it is a 57 1/2 cue.

Obviously I made a mistake if Dan Janes dated tduncan's cue as circa 1975. My apologies to Mr. Janes for providing inaccurate information. Thanks to tduncan!
