Hi Guys, I have a grueling flight to the Philippines coming up soon with several layovers and I need to stock up on books to keep me entertained. What do you recommend?

Books I Own:
-Running the Table: The Legend of Kid Delicious
-Road Player: The Danny Diliberto Story

I also plan to buy Pool Wars by Jay Helfert today. Didn't Jay release a sequel to this book as well?

Any other good pool books based on stories of going on the road?

Playing Off The Rail: A Pool Hustler's Journey keeps popping up on Amazon but I've never heard of it. Any good?

Playing off the rail is good. Longer than the others and written by a real writer...with stories about people you might know.

I'm Keith Hernandez - Hernandez's road from the minors to the big leagues.

Collision of Wills - Great book on the 1950s Baltimore Colts.

Of Mice and Magic - Book on the golden age of American animation.

Encyclopedia of Pool Hustlers - Freddy Bentivegna

Banking with the Beard - see above

Watching T-Wheels, "Road Stories with Legends of Pool" - Mark Cantrill (I think i'm mentioned in Chapter 12 or 13 only because I was standing near a legend)

McGoorty would be my number one suggestion. You can get it as an ebook from Amazon or Barnes and Noble or get a paper cover copy.

Confessions of a Pool Hustler - Robert Leblanc

Bet High and Kiss Low - Grady Mathews

I really enjoyed "playing off the rail"-

did you like the danny d. book? I'm interested in peeping that one.

The Green Felt Jungle by Gerald Huber is pretty good. He's a member here I think, and if you search the title you should be able to find his contact info to get a copy.

I haven't finished Danny D's book yet because I only read on flights lol but I'm more than half way through it and I've loved it so far.

if you havent read them yet just for historical value and they are great reads
the color of money (different from the movie )
the hustler

All of the ones already mentioned are good. I would also recommend Hustler Days and The Hustler and The Champ both by RA Dyer.

I read Pool Wars as a ebook download (it was awesome), but couldn't find Pool Wars 2 in the same format. Jay, any input on this?

Also, someone mentioned Bet High and Kiss Low by Grady Matthews. I've always heard that it A. has a lot of dirty stories and B. isn't particularly well written, but I would still like to find a copy without paying an arm and a leg if anyone knows how.

Buddy Hall's book...Rags To Riches....available used on E-bay $200. Very, very good.

Most have not read it. I have.

You must have a copy for sale. Used, on ebay. For 200$.

That book reads like it was written by a 5th grader and was printed using play-dough and marker ink and a few snorts of dishwasher powder.

I am a fast reader and it was so poor, took me nearly 8mos to force my way through it.

In reality, that book wouldn't be worth 20$.
In the pool world, it somehow rose to a hundred+.

Funny world.

Three books stand out among the dozens I've read and own:

Playing Off The Rail Endlessly entertaining stories about life on the road in the mid-90's, featuring mostly all players you've either met or heard about.

McGoorty: The Story of a Billiard Bum

But above all, there's the late Freddy The Beard's The "Encyclopedia" of Pool Hustlers. This is a big book with alphabetically listed mini-bios of hundreds of road players and hangouts both famous and infamous, all with accompanying photos. Everyone's there from Cole Dickson to Lori Shampo to Buddy Hall to "Geese" to Wimpy to Bugs and everyone in between. This is one of those books you keep going back to over and over again, the one indispensable book for anyone who loves stories about the road.
