Need help with Schon

How is everyone doing? Hope all is going well and enjoying the superbowl.
My dad is wanting to get a new tip for his Schon, and doesn't know what to go for or what tip is on the cue right now.

In 1983 he went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and ordered a custom Schon cue. The tip on it right now is the original tip from factory. I was wondering what brand tip did Schon used back in 1983 and who build the Schon cues during those years. Thanks for all the help.

If you're interested in a new type of tip, Duc Lam is selling some Molavia tips. 20$ for 3 tips, and the Molavias are comparable to Mooris. This way your dad gets a tip and you get 2 as well. :D
Look in the sell/trade section.
Make sure to get the hard tips though, unless you prefer a really soft hit.
 
Oh, and Schon has their own proprietary tip. AFIK another tip similar to those are water buffalo tips as they have a similar hit.
 
I have heard a lot of good things on Moori and Kamui tips. I notice that they are both layered tips. What are the pros and cons of layered tips vs regular tips? I hear that they last longer, why?

I asked my dad to see if he likes layered tips, but he said about 20 years ago (cough* cough*) he tried layered tips and he said he had bad experienced with it. He said you could be in the middle of a game and a layer of the tip would just peel off.

Sorry for my newbie unexperienced questions. I'm going through a learning process and am trying to help my dad as well on getting him back in the game. Thanks

I think the closest tip to the original Schon tip is a Water Baffalo. I'm using a Wizard Medium now and love it. Have the price of a Moori too.
 
Bob Runde was working at Schon when your dad's cue was made. Call Bob and ask him.

Back in the 80's the tip may have been a Triangle.
 
Thanks for the reply, I'm hoping he would buy me and his cue a lamui or moori tips, I wanted to try one for a while. I have an elk master on my schmelke right now, and I like the way it plays, but it looses it's grit to hold chalk pretty quick (I don't know what you call this, but the tip gets compacted and smooth where chalk wouldn't really stick). I had to scuff it last night with some sand paper cause I don't have a shaper/scuffer deal like a cue cube. I came out to almost dime shape, just a tad bit off, but it is a lot better. Anyone know how I can get a hold of Bod Runde?

I've been playing with and selling Schon cues for around 20 years. Triangle tips seem to be the closest thing to the original Schon tips IMO.

Many players like layered tips because once installed they ned very little shaping (no mushrooming). The problem with some layered tips is they do get "icy" or slick, and need roughing up with a pick, but that can delaminate them also....SO, it a crap shoot. I do like Talisman (medium) layered tips on my Schon, but I always seem to go back to Triangle.

p.s. I do my own tip work, so I can swap out tips whenever....if that has anything to o with your choice? :)
