I've always had great luck with bison chucks. The ones I've had all ran very true, and stayed that way despite significant use and abuse.

P.S. I'm not a cuemaker, so my advice comes from my experience as a machinist.

Buck chucks are a little pricey but they are good chucks. A lot depends on how old you are and how long you'll be using it. Bison and a couple of Chinese set-tru 6 jaw scroll chucks are just about as accurate as the Buck but they will wear faster with a lot of use.

Alex has a Clausing that looks just like that one and he bought a Jacobs chuck and spindle and the spring collet system for it pretty cheap used.it is a pretty nice setup.

fyi, replacement parts for the Clausings are high as heck, but available next day.

IMO buy a diect mount adjustable chuck if you buy a chuck. Bison make s avery good chuck as does buck and autoblok. Very expensive though. If you are going to spend a bunch of money on a chuck I would suggest rather looking into a collet system. 16c or J2 Don't know how big the spindle bore is but I would look collet before chuck. JMHO

I did heard of the collet system. But I also heard that collet system it might be very limited to variable size for the different work pieces?

It would be.
And you will need another lathe to turn down pieces to fit the collet.
Bison 6-jaw set true chuck cost around $600 plus the backplate.

Kenny........you can't go wrong with a six jaw adjustable type chuck. Bison or buck either one will work fine. You have options with both kinds....solid jaw or removable top jaw type will give you even more options.
If you can fit an 8" on it... that's the way to go IMO....but a 6" will get the job done. I would not get a collet set up for your first lathe.
Which ever way you go...mount the back plate and machine it on the lathe before mounting the chuck.

edit........go new if you can....my experience with ebay chucks has not been good...

Not if you use a spur drive. Put in a center and spin away.

Shaish, never thought of dat.
How about long pieces?
No problems not being chucked?

I agree with you Craig - I don't know of any operation to do with cues that needs to be more accurate than .0001. I keep hearing about needing to be accurate with Tenths of a Thousandth but heck a lot of the time I get a different reading in three or 4 different places because of the differences in the density of the wood. It is not the same as measuring metal.

But if you have the extra money to spend it can't hurt to overkill.

Good Cuemaking,
