To start off I shall not list any room's name in this thread.
Being an avid pool player for 20+ years it seems that pool room owners(as a general consensus) today are caring less about pool. Poor room service(waitstaff-pro shop-bartenders), shoddy equiptment and neglected playing conditions are some of the complaints I have.
I know the whole concept of business practices(holding a business degree), but at which point does a bar become a pool room and a pool room become somthing else. To me the concept of a pool room is a general meeting place to play pool while enjoying beverages, food and mild leveled music.
Within the past few weeks I have traveled to a few pool rooms to play in larger scaled tournaments. I do this throughout the year enjoying matches with top tier players. Taking the wins and losses as lessons in the constant betterment of my pool game.
Both of the traveled to tournaments were in the area of 50+ players with many spectators. What a great opportunity for a pool room to make money.
Well, the first tournament had tables with well worn cloth on a great table manufacturer equiptment. Not the worst playing conditions, but the worst food and drink service. Now I know you think I am being picky, but seriously I am not. If a room sets itself up as a waitstaff style establishment you expect them to have servers on hand. Point in case: Main event started on a Saturday afternoon with appoximately 200 to 250 people in the building 1 server. Sunday afternoon tournament resumes approximately 75 people in the room no server and no bartender.
Second tournament large room and a large field. You go to the bar order food and they call your number. No problem there that is how they set up their establishment. Problem is equiptment. Cloth is close to 8 months past its much deserved changing time. Most table cloths should be changed on an average of every 6 months(being the industry standard). Now besides the cloth being worn out it was sooooooo loose you could bridge your hand on the table and push your bridge hand forward 4 to 6 inches without it leaving the cloth. Pull the cloth up appoximately 2 inches. These conditions are not what I or many other players consider to be acceptable for paying $50+ entry plus expenses for travel.
My home pool room must be the exception to these conditions. They re-cloth every 6 months or less, have a great staff and great equiptment. They take pride in their establishment, and have some of the best comments from roving tournament directors, roadies and local patrons.
I guess in a nutshell I am venting. I fealt disrespected as a pool player and as a customer from these two venues listed above.
