So, has the new Amsterdam Billiards opened downtown as scheduled? How does it look? And was there a good sendoff for the old one?

sjm said:I visited the new club on Monday afternoon. It's a beautiful, upscale room. The mood is similar to that of the now closed Amsterdam West, but slightly dimmer lighting makes it a bit more serene and tranquil.
There are two pool tables up in front, near the exquisite bar, with metal railing separating them from the bar and from all the other tables, ensuring the privacy of the players. I'd be surprised if these don't turn out to be the house tables.
There are about 30 tables in all, nearly all of them Brunswick Gold Crown IV, and two of them, both located in the center section of the room, have tight pockets. All the tables have been, or are about to be, refelted and look great.
Most impressively, there are many plasma TV's all over the room, surely over 20, and all players will have a TV nearby as they play pool. There are numerous plasma TVs in the bar area, too.
Another nice touch is the addition of windows on the 11th Street side of the room. There are also windows on the 4th Avenue side, so now the room has sunlight on its entire perimeter.
A long-time selling point of Amsterdam has been its outstanding management team, and it appears that most of the staff have been retained.
All in all, I was most impressed with the new club and I'm excited about all the pool I hope to play there.
Believe me, you couldn't check the downtown Amsterdam Billiard Club out soon enough. It really is something special. In his typical fashion, owner Greg Hunt has delivered a superior pool product and the local pool players are the lucky beneficiaries.
I hope to see you there.

Yes, there was a nice sendoff party last Wednesday night at Amsterdam West, wit open bar. Many of the regulars came, and many who'd been regulars once upon a time came, too. The result was a nostalgic evening filled with good pool, good drinks, good stories and good memories.
Nostroke said:The new one opened last night- there are a lot of mirrors and there is a $26 Power play rate from 9PM-close. That is all i know about it.
robertno1pool said:What is a Power Play rate? ?
sjm said:The term "power play" has been around a long time at the Amsterdam Billiard Club, and pertains to special offers to play pool for less than the posted table time rates.
cheemagun said:so everyday its 26 bucks from 9 - close ? what time is closing?
why are the two tight pockets in the middle of the room ? how come they dont use those as the house tables ?
Are there any carom or snooker tables?sjm said:... There are about 30 tables in all, nearly all of them Brunswick Gold Crown IV, and two of them, both located in the center section of the room, have tight pockets. ...
I'll be going to see 'em soon, but I can already tell you it's doubtful.Bob Jewett said:Are there any carom or snooker tables?

sjm said:The only place I know of that has both a snooker table and a carom table in NYC is the private New York Athletic Club on Central Park South.

Unless you meant Manhattan.
