New Aegis solid rod from Atlas

I just wanted to give a quick heads up on this new product. Eric told me they had a new manufacturing process and convinced me to try it...glad I did. Years ago Aegis was one of my fav ferrule materials....it was clean & hit very nice & durable. Then recently the past couple of years I tried a couple more orders....complete junk. Looked like actual dirt/trash was mixed into the weave. I only used it for house cue replacements...bad as it looked...it was still durable. Well to the point....the new stuff Eric recommended is terrific. It machines very nicely....no pits...no trash. It also has that slight ivoryish color similar to the no longer available Grice material. The "hit" is wonderful....very, very similar to the good old LBM. The ONLY downside (and its really not one) is that the material has two fairly bold lines running down opposite sides of the rod. It looks EXACTLY like the older Schon ferrules....if you remember when looking closely you could see the lines on each side. The lines are the same color as the rest of the material so it doesn't really stand out & I believe most customers wouldn't really notice...or care. I have it installed on Inzombiac's new cue that I'll have pics posted later this evening in the Gallery. I'll try my best to get a fairly close up picture of the ferrule. So there you have it....in a nutshell....its available in solid rod form, machines nice, no trash, hits very good, nice color, and seems to me it'll stand up well & be fairly bulletproof.
It has my stamp of approval & I believe many of you who have been looking for a clean LBM replacement will be quite pleased.:)

Sad part is it's a sheet turned round.
I can't deal with those two lines. I'll pass.

I just went to their web-site and all I see is the Aegis 11 offered for sale. Is this the new stuff they are offering or am I missing something? I would like to try some out as I've only got about 5 feet of the good LBM left. According to their site, this is rolled and not sheet material.

KV,
Thanx for the heads-up. I've been waiting for SOMEBODY to come up with some Aegis. I need to place an Atlas order tomorrow anyway so I'll grab a stick and check it out. This is positive. Who knows, maybe the new LBM is right around the corner. Thanx Bud, KJ

When you call to order it....just ask for Eric & tell him you want the "new" Aegis solid rod...the same that Varney ordered. I doubt they have the new version listed on their website yet. Here is the best pic I could get....it really doesn't show the line very well but its hard to see in person unless you have it under good light. I was REALLY impressed with the "hit" quality. Now if they can just keep the product consistant.

I may have missed it but.........does this stuff have a weave in it? Is it sheet cut round? Maybe just the picture but it looks as if it is slightly translucent where it comes to the wood. This was one of things that turned me off of the Ivorx.....being translucent looking.

I just spoke with Eric and the new Aegis is rolled & molded...not cut from a sheet. Again he stressed its very durable. I'll test one on my j/b and then we'll know for sure. It does have the very slightest of weave visable but you really have to look closely in good light. As for it being translucent....I find it to be no more than the old LBM. I installed another today on one of my shop test cues that I know how it hits....once again...I really like this stuff. Nice that its in solid rod form so you can make the ferrules however you prefer.:)

Did you Robogrip one until it crushed?
Were you sweatin' before it crushed or yawnin'?:D

This post is not about the new Aegis ferrule material but it is about ferrules. I just installed a Elforyn ferrule on a cue for a fellow. This was my first attempt using Elforyn. I put the shaft into my tip lathe and installed a tip and then extended the shaft enough where I could sand and polish the ferrule. I always sand down to 1200 grit and then use jeweler's rouge and polish it up shiny and bright. Once this was done I slid the shaft back in and clamped my collet onto the ferrule and shaped the tip. I then pulled out the shaft and to my amazement, the imprint of the collet was indented into the Elforyn ferrule. The polishing was enough to soften the plastic I guess. Anyone else found this to happen? I wish I knew as I would have saved about 25.00 and not purchased the material. Just a heads up if anyone else is contemplating the purchase of some.

Thanks for doing my home work. Sounds well enough to peak my interest.
If we are close to what we could get out of the old LBM without the headaches of having to cut one off every now and then because of trash in it, I may have to give it a try.

Hi Dick; I recently installed a SABER-T ferrule on my playing Q. I really liked everything about it, BUT it cracked after only 3 weeks of play. Then I put on a ELFORYN ferrule. I had a little trouble getting it to polish, but so far I like the way it looks & plays. It's only been on the Q for 2 days, so the jury is still out...JER

I've found that you must leave the Saber T with a thick cap. A hole all the way through is asking for trouble. I found out the hard way too. With the thick cap it does hit nice and is cleaner than anything.

The ferrule I made from the Saber-T, had a through hole...JER

I use Elforyn for Joints and Butts and love it. I have a 4' rod of the Aegis that I've only cut a few inches off and will probably never use it again. The Elforyn costs more, but looks great when finished and it's easy to keep clean.

I have not tried it as a Ferrule yet though.

The cueball squirt police will arrest you for that.

That is a little strange because I have installed hundreds with a thru hole. I use a 5/16 hole. I would think that if any of my customers had a problem the shaft would have been returned for new ferrule and tip at my expense.

Thanks for the heads-up and Good Cuemaking, :)

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I have always been leary about pvc in a cue. Not worth the headache. Any one heard anything about lbm making a comeback. Or better yet is the stuff from Prather's clean?
Happy hunting....
