New balls on worn cloth

Hello,

At work I have a pool table that I can use daily for about two hours. It sure beats having to pay hourly.

It’s an 8ft table but the cloth is worn and the balls have chips/scratches.The balls are Aramith Premium balls, I don’t mind buying new balls but obviously since it will be donated to work I don’t want to spend a lot. I was thinking about buying a new set of Aramith standard balls.

My question will new balls on a worn cloth make a big difference or am I better off sticking with the worn/chipped Aramith premium ones at work? Also since I’m technically stepping down from the premium to the standards will it be a big difference in feel?

BIG diff. Old chipped balls play like shit on ANY cloth.

They play somewhat worse. If there is no one playing on the table who runs out, the balls will not be a big factor.

I would use the offer of donated balls to get the company to replace the cloth at the same time. It's worth a try.

Yes, buy new balls! It will make a BIG difference. Buy the Dynosphere brand. They have a set for about $100 that is equivalent to the $350 Aramith sets. The lower priced Aramith sets are not as good. The coating and finish on the ball is not as polished. All the Dyansphere sets, from their cheap $100 one to their $300 one, all have the same finish. It's only the aesthetic design that is different. So you can't get a bad set.

One thing to check before you get new balls is to maker sure there are ZERO nails or screw heads in the pockets of the table. Otherwise, the new balls will get chipped immediately.

I'm actually in the same situation. I have a nice GC4 in my apartment, but our leasing office has a junk 7' table with junk balls. I go there a lot to get my mail, and always hit balls for a rack or two. I want to put my Dynasphere balls on that table (just swap them, no one will ever know), but there are a bunch of nails in the pocket that will ruin them.

I agree on the Dynaspheres. Absolutely check for nail or screw protrusions from every pocket very, very carefully under a bright light. Ask for a new cloth as a trade off for your new ball contribution only if you are fine bringing attention to your extended pool play at work😁👍

Yes, check for nail heads at the back of the pockets — something caused those balls to be chipped and this would be a prime suspect.

Just updated some pictures of the pockets. Noticed some nails that are flush to the plastic but you can feel the flat part of the nail.

Can anyone help give some input if this is enough to damage the balls or am I okay getting a cheap set of Aramiths?

When a ball hits the nail area, the plastic compresses and the nail doesn't. It shouldn't be possible to touch any metal in the pocket. And those nails look like they are exactly where the ball will hit frequently.

Whoever installed/recovered that table didn't know what they were doing.

Do not buy new balls until the pockets are fixed.

Get a table brush, microfiber rag, small hand vac, and make a bucket polisher.
It will be night and day different.
Might not even need new balls.
