New Billiard Painting in Progress

You should increase the size/thickness of the cue shaft so it is proportionate in relation to the cue ball. It may also be a good idea to accentuate the taper of the cue slightly since the perspective of the viewer is behind the shaft. Looking good!

There have been other threads on the forum showing Billiards Artwork, but that Artwork was already completed and ready for sale or viewing. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in my other Billiard Painting thread, I have started a new Billiard themed Painting and I thought it might be interesting to document the process of its creation from start to finish here on AZB. With each step of progress I make on it I will post new photos of that progress.

I will also be loading the complete process in a video to my YouTube Channel upon its completion. You can see more of my Artwork there.

This is on a 15 x 30 stretched canvas and is being done entirely with Oil Paint.
The tentative title of it for now is - "9 Ball for the Money"

This 1st photo is the Rough Sketch on the Canvas.
The 2nd Photo is the Sketch Finalized
In the 3rd Photo I have begun putting in the Underpainting, which is basically a Primer Coat.

I had a print that was similar. I found one on ebay to show.

Wow that is exactly it. I hadn't seen that print in over 20 years I'm surprised I remembered it so clearly.

Here's a different shot of it:

Sorry not trying to step on the op's efforts, this is one of my all time favorite posters. Thanks macguy for digging this up I could not find any reference to this. Now I have to find one somewhere

The artist Ed Rowe had a pool room in Miami with his wife called "Pegs Pocket". Nice place their house pro was Tommy Brown. John DiToro played there also.

I guess it proves that artistic license can be a good thing. This artist wasn't overly concerned with correct proportions, yet got a good result (probably couldn't have had as good a result had the artist chosen to be "realistic" with the proportions).

suggestion

Very nice! The cue stick seems a little thin or small if you want to keep things proportionate. Better than I could do. Nice work.

Yes, Thanks, I've been looking at that, it looks more like a Snooker shaft compared to the Cue Ball, this is why I put the painting on here while it is in progress, to get more eyes looking for things I might have overlooked, or to get a second opinion on the things I see that need to be adjusted, good news is I've already fattened it up and you'll see it in the next photo I post. The painting is on drying time right now & I will post a new photo tomorrow. Where else am I going to find so many experts to help me with the painting? I may take your suggestion or I may not, but I appreciate all of the help I have been getting so far.

I know that most of you probably have very little experience with Oil Painting, just keep in mind that what you're seeing right now is the very preliminary stages of the painting. There will be at least 2 to 3 more layers of paint applied over the Primer Coat, and some areas could have 4 or 5 layers to achieve the results I'm looking for. I expect this painting to take about 6 to 8 weeks to complete.

Shows you how art is interpreted differently by everyone. I saw a whole different scenario where the loser threw the c-note on the table because the shooter had only a hanger left. Otherwise why is the money there?

That's the funny thing about Art, it is so subjective, as the old saying goes - Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder (or Beer Holder as the case may be), or, One Mans Trash is another Mans Treasure. You can't & won't be able to please everybody!

I am aware of the Rule of Thirds! I am also aware of the "Rule of Artistic License"
As the Artist of the Print that has been posted is also aware of.

If I wanted a Photo of this set up, I would just set it up on my Table and take a Photo! That's not the point of doing a painting, the point is to tell a story and DogsPlayingPool has come the closest to getting the story so far.

Cue Proportions Fixed

Well, hopefully the Cue doesn't look like a Snooker Cue anymore compared to the Cue Balls size. Also got in a second layer of paint on the background. With the next layer on the rails & cushions I'm going to raise the cushion edge up just a bit to make it more proportional, but before I get to that, I have question for all of you.

What Color of Cloth would you like to see on the Table? I started out thinking the Traditional Green, but would you like to see it with Tournament Blue? or some other Color? at this point it's not to late to change the Color choice.

Made a bit of Progress

I've been able to make a bit of progress on the painting in the last couple of days. At the moment this is not the primary painting I am working on, I'm getting close to finishing another painting and have been focusing more on it lately. While that painting is on drying time I was able to get a bit of work done on the Billiards painting.

Here I've pretty much finished the background area, and I've gotten a second layer of paint on the Rails, Cushions, & Pockets. Still one more layer to go plus the details! I want to get that part of the painting close to finished before I move into the big playing area.

Sold

I was going to add my thoughts on a couple of things or changes you should make, But as I understand it art is the vision of the person creating it, That being said I would like to be first in line when this is done if you want to sell it. Please PM me.

Awesome painting but I think the shaft looks a bit skinny, no?

Edit,

The newer version looks better never mind. I only saw the first page.

here's a little feedback for you:

you got talent! lots of it.

and your willingness to float your work by us for opinions and critique is mighty brave and, I believe, shows an earnest interest in trying to get the best out of your work that you can.

I also like the traditional green cloth for this. I think I liked the black background though, now I see it's blue. To me, the blue competes a little with the green whereas, if the background were some other color, more contrasting perhaps, it would work better. consider tans, dark golds, maybe burgundy or even a gray, or whatever others might play off the green better. The blue, to me, is very close in the same color family - IMO.

please take a look at the measles dot size, the dots look small to me. And, of course, not red. ;)

thx for sharing your work with us.

best,
brian kc

my last bit of opinionated advice:

regarding the hundo on the table, and why it is there...

if there were the hand, or even just the very fingertips of the opponent hovering over the $100, then this could complete the story.

maybe renaming the painting "conceding the 9" or "conceding the game" or simply "concession". Ties in with the 9 being a hanger.

OR

maybe I go back to work doing what I do best which has nothing to do with knowing about art... :)

but, seriously, great work in progress.

looking forward to your updates.

best,
brian kc

Working on it again - Finally

Some of you may remember this from earlier this year. I had originally planned to have it finished by late Feb. or early March & ready for sale by June, well, "best laid plans" etc... A whole long list of things came up that I had to deal with, along with finding a way to pay the Bills, so this project had to be set aside for a while, but happily I'm now back working on it again and hope to have it finished by late Sept., but not making any promises, (don't know what curve ball life is going to through at me next, LOL).

As you can see I've made some progress on the parts that were already well underway, Still need to do some clean up on the rails & cushions and get the shadow in for the 9 Ball then I can move on to the rest of it. That Background is actually a Purple & not nearly as bright as these photos make it seem to be, it's the overhead lighting that's causing it to look so bright & not quite the true color!
