5:1 and affordable is less than $8000 with mid range spindle?
7 grand?
I hope not.
Lee has not quoted a price.
I'm hoping without the computer and software around 4-5 with lower speed spindle.
But, I could be just dreaming.

I built my own 4-axis Gantry system. I bought the linear rails and bearings, the ball-screw assemblies, the stepper motors and reducers, the toroidal transformer, drivers, capacitors, diode and break board off of e-bay over about a 2 year period. I bought my metal from a exotic metal scrap yard at 1.00 a pound. I already had the Sherline fourth axis and AHHA operating software. At first I just used a P/C laminate trimmer that I had. I bought misc. travel limiters and what ever else was needed. It cost me around 2600.00 to build but that was not counting the stuff I already had. The fourth axis, operating software, cad/cam software and other items would easily cost another 25 - 3000.00. Keep in mind that I bought all top of the line, but used, components off of e-bay for less than 20 cents on the dollar. If I would be building the same system but using new ball screws and linear bearings the price would easily be around 6000.00 more. 7/8 ball screws around 1500.00 each. 2 sets of NSK linear bearings and rails 1600.00 a set and so on.

I am sure that these CNC systems will not be using the same components that I did but parts and labor still runs into money. You don't get precision, accuracy, repeatability and any kind of life expectation using cheap components. One nice thing is software pricing keeps dropping. I have AHHA which is a primitive doss based system that cost a lot of money in it's day but I've already got it and it's stable as long as I can keep finding computers for it. It can't use anything faster than a 100 MGH computer. Windows can't even be on the computer.

You can buy square rails 6' long for 180$ brand new the bearings cost all most as much as the rails at 55 a pop. this is after a boatload of digging.

These are Thompson but they are about the same that I used:

This price is times 2 plus 4 trucks per axis. MSC is where I got my retail prices when deciding whether to bid or not on e-bay.
