It is my opinion...the rubber was installed improperly....the apex, or the height of the contact point is too high.......This will cause a "Thump" when a ball hits the rail.........Your rubber should have been ok......But if your installer put them on wrong they will never play right........Hope it was someone that knew what they were doing..????? There is a pretty good way to see if I am right.....Undo your rails....or just one rail, and put a small rod or piece of wood under the rail at the outside edge of the table. If you have done this right ....your rail will tilt inward towards the playing surface of the table....Snug the rail and now bounce the ball.....If it no longer Thumps......your rubber is too high.........You only have to raise the back of the rail about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch.....Hope this helps ..... Isn't it a lot easier to just measure the height of the cushion with a square? I believe he already stated the height was a 1 3/8th's inches, and that height is already on the low side, but still okay to play with.

There are several models of playmaster pool tables...like Ford has cars. Which one we don't know. The reason I asked if it was a one piece slate is because that would be one reason as to why the rails thud when banked against because the rail bolts to through a wood frame around the slate, unlike a 3 piece slate in which the rail bolts go through the slate into the rails therefore holding the rails down to the slate more solidly. I have built over 500 pool tables, coin-operated and home use, so I kind of know a little as to what I'm talking about. As far as recovering pool tables...well over 5000 tables.

Not trying to say anyone is wrong or right in here, just trying to get the facts in order to make an educated decision as to what the fix for the problem is. When asking for advice from a billiards technician one needs to first be able to give some information as to what it is that you're having a problem with! Even at an auto parts store, in order to get the parts you need to fix your car...you need to give them more information than just the color of your car so to speak!!!...LOL

Actually at 1 3/8 the nose height is on the low side by 1/16

12/06 this thread was started. What was the outcome?

Can't believe I missed this thread...on a Playmaster I'd say the thump is either from the gap in the wood in the rail where the floating nut plates are inserted, or, depending on what kind of thump, it could be the blind.

Those tables a notorious for the blinds loosening over time. AMF slate has grooves cut in the backing. When the blinds are fit into the groove in the backside of the rail they end up getting screwed right into that groove in the slate. Not enough meat there to hold in my opinion, so if you don't do something to fix it when you install them, they loosen up.

Is I got the call to check out this guys table for what's causing the thump, that's the very first thing I would check.
