i here now propose a brand new format to settle who is crowned the 9-ball champion of the planet earth. a single elimination race to 25. LET'S DO IT!

Try watching Ralph Soquet vs. Takahashi Okumura on a race to 25 set.
Take a sleeping tent with you then come back and tell us.

I thought we broke you from sucking eggs. I guess not. Back to the drawing bard we go.

actually i think it would be even more exciting watching a single elimination race to 25, than a long drawn out round robin.

Snooker playoffs

The World Snooker championships have been held for many years with very long races - single elimination.
I would assume that the best player of the year usually wins the event. They must qualify in many tourneys over a few months , just to get to the playoffs. I think the Finals' Match is single elimination > Race to 18!!! It takes more than one day!
Too bad this is about the only country in the world where we cannot watch the tourney!

Bernie I can see some logic in what you are proposing. A long match is the best way to determine the better player. Round Robin versus single elimination. I dont know which is better. I still love the british approach. Where the finals takes place over a 2 day period with morning and evening sets are played. I mean the World is now offering $65,000 to the finalist. It should be longer than 11 or 13 games.

I dont know if the American publics need for quick results in a short period of time is ready for it yet. But golf seems to be able to digest a 18 hole day we can go for 25 games.

yeah, it just seems to make sense. you see, if i proposed a race to 25 double elimination, it would be sheer bordom. many races to 5 round robin is plain out silly, to determine the world champion. so that's why i say, how about 1 race to 25? the players would be "up for it" ready, and steady. if your behind 11-3, no worry, your going to 25. you know? also, to make it even more balanced and fair, winner breaks, until the first person gets to 15. once the first person gets to 15, then it becomes alternate break!, now, no one can run away with it, like strickland did to bustamante in 2002. i believe this format, would be the most accurate way, to crown a "world" champion, not a silly race to 5 games for 3 boring days. just my opinion.

But it makes good TV

I like the Matchroom way for one reason, and one reason only. With races to 5, you get to see 12-14 televised matches in one day during the group stages. This gives viewers like myself the opportunity to check the speed of a bunch of players, rather than just 2 a day.

Maybe the semis and final could be played race to 25. That would be pretty cool.

JMHO.

It does not have to be 25 even. Make it races to 13 alternate break and seed it with a world ranking system so that champs don't play till deep in the tourney. Single elimination would work great and I think the tourney would be better then what we see now.

Snooker is a little bit different. They can take breaks between frames and usually there is an "mid-session interval", about 20minutes every 4 frames and they play only 8 frames per session. And in the latter stages of snooker WC they play only afternoon and evening sessions 8 frames each and the semis and finals are divided to 2 days. So, after all they don't play 35 frames in a row ;)

Hey, Finland might be the only country in the world where there is no way of watching WPC, even though this year there are 4 players representing Finland !! This sucks a$$ bigtime !

From your comments, either they've changed the format since last year, or you're not aware of the format they actually use.

From the celebrated race-to-120 between Efren and Earl, it's clear that even a match that long cannot clearly decide who is the better player. The current races fit a lot of matches into the TV slots, and give a lot of players a shot at the championship.
