New gallery of images from the Dallas pool scene in the 1980s

That's New York Blackie in #32. There was already a Low Down Dirty Red, but we should make room for Down and Dirty New York Blackie. I love him and I hate him. That's the kind of guy he is. Freddie would understand.

And that's a young and beautiful Cathy Vanover in #63 with Jim Webb. Although she wasn't a Vanover yet.
Jay, I'm glad you pointed out that she wasn't married to Bob yet. Now I feel better about putting that one in the gallery!:D

Since I have inserted some new images, the photo numbers are changed and I would appreciate those of you who know some of these people going back and leaving comments for unidentified individuals.

I don't think that is NY Blackie, Jay. It does look a lot like him but I am pretty sure that's not him. Blackie, Al Bonife, lived here for a year or two before he moved to NO and we did a lot of things together. Like my signature says, I Could Be Wrong.

I saw a guy in Houston once that I thought was Blackie and was told the guy's name but can't remember it. I think this might be the same guy.

Since I can't say for sure myself, not having ever known him, I'd better go back and put a question mark after this identification. I think Mike Haines told me it was Blackie, but I'm not sure.

bill,
thanks alot for all of your hard work, i really appreciate it. Do you have any old pics of Joey Barnes, Ralph Cortez or Coy Lee?

That's him. I'd bet on it! I'd know that mug in a rainstorm on a moonless night. And that's him in photo #70 also. The dead giveaway is he's riffling a deck of cards. Blackie fancied himself a Gin Rummy player also, until he met some Jew boy in Bakersfield that cooked his goose. He gave up on me after I gave him the cure a few times. We played all day for three days.

If that isn't Blackie, then he has an identical twin that no one ever heard of. I looked at all the small features like his lips and eyes and mouth. Hey, no one else is nearly that ugly!

Thanks, I had forgotten Cathy's last name prior to Vanover.

I went to page 70 with a totally open mind. Assuming you were going to convince me with that photo. Sorry, I still don't think that's him. In 80 I think Al was still running the Sport Palace in NO. I also think the guy in the photos is younger than Blackie. No, I will not bet on this because Blackie is still hot at me for beating him in the NO open in 77 and just might dump me and say it is him, LOL.

Cathy won the Women's ACUI Nationals when she and I were students together at the University of North Texas.

She was playing great that whole year.

Now..........

Whether that is Blackie in 1980 or not, this is his game of choice today.

Compare that face and even those arms with the photos Bill has posted. That's the same guy! Blackie got around pretty good. He made all the circles and then some. He was hanging around Rusty's when I popped in. That was in '84. Blackie always moved around a lot. I'll bet he's lived in 50 different cities in his life for a month or more.

He spent a couple months around Bakersfield in the early 70's trying to beat me and a few other locals. He made a couple of small scores to stay afloat. I knew him from New York at 7-11 when I was a kid. Saw him at Johnston City and the Stardust. In Bakersfield, then Le Cue in Houston, Rusty's in Dallas and a few other places since then. Mostly at One Pocket tourneys I went to in the 90's. He may have come to one or two of the Atlantic City tourneys in the 80's also. I can't remember seeing him at Derby City, but I haven't been to all of them.

Don't go balistic, Jay. Like I said, there is a chance that it is him. It does look like him. But, I'm sure you will remember this hair style, that he wore as long as I knew him. That would be 1979 as the last time I saw him in NO, before I moved to Chicago. Remember, Blackie was in love with the "Wet Look"? I have an email address that I have sent him stuff in the recent past and sent him one last night but it bounced back, no good any more. He and Buddy did stop by here on the way to a Memphis tourney last year but I missed both of them.

OK,,,,,,,,,,maybe you got 80% the nuts. There would be about 10-12 years difference. Really tough having to fade you and John Henderson, LOL.

Not sure about 19, his mannerisms & facial features look like Sid in that shot, but if you look at 26, it's the same guy, but I wouldn't think Sid on that one. I was thinking Gale Gladden after looking it over.

More than 10-12 years difference in these two photos. The first one is Blackie circa the 60's and Johnston City/Stardust days, when he was in his late 20's to early 30's. The second is a good 25+ years later when he would be in his mid 50's or older.

I guarantee you Bill that first photo is not from 1979 (try 1969). I was around him a lot in the 60's and 70's. Freddie, chime in here. What I will agree on, is that both photos are NY BLACKIE.
