New gallery of images from the Dallas pool scene in the 1980s

I guarantee you Bill that first photo is not Blackie in 1979. I was around him a lot in the 60's and 70's. Freddie, chime in here.

I just found out, the young Blackie was taken in 1966 so your point is right but not that many years. Wasn't the later photo taken in 1980 or was it, THE 80s? Yep, I checked. It says THE 80s. It is probably about 20 years later.

I'm not as dumb as I look. :)

I say the second photo is late 80's, so it would be 22-23 years later. That may well be correct.

I never knew Blackie, so I can't settle the issue from personal experience. But I did write Mike Haines, who took the photo, and I asked him how sure he was that it was Blackie. He replied, "Only as sure as every single soul who called his name or referred to him, used the term "Blackie', and he had a yankee accent." On the other hand, Dan Janes looked at the gallery and said, "I have met Blackie a few times but the only thing that looks familiar is the overbite. .. Is it Blackie? We may never know."

I have a great idea. We'll ask Blackie. He's still alive and kicking last I heard. Probably has a 25 year old girlfriend. What a guy!

Yes, we will know for sure, Bill. I have a couple of friends who are going to let him know call or email me. I will tell the truth. If he says it's him I will tell you that. Hey, I have already said it's 80% the nuts that it's him. I was under the impression that the photo was taken in 80. Not the case, unless you can ask Mike when it was taken in the 80s.

Wait a minute. You said the first photo was taken in 1979 originally, and the second one was 10-12 years later, making it late 80's to early 90's. Now you're saying you think the second photo is from 1980. That would make it one year apart on your original assessment. Man this guy really aged fast.

Now we know the first photo was from 1966 (no surprise here). I would guess the second photo is from the 90's, not the late 80's. I still think they are 25+ years apart. Not 10-12 or ONE!

The only part you are wrong on is me saying the first photo was from 79. I thought the first photo was from 68-70. The title of Bill's photos says from the 80s. I said I last saw Blackie in 79, just before Bill Stack and I moved to Chicago. From Bill's title, 80s, I got it in my head that the photo and all others were taken from a tournament in 1980. If the photo was from 1980 I was sure Blackie couldn't have aged that much, from the last time I saw him in 79 to 80. Now we know, by the title of the photos 80s, that it could have been taken in 1989 but not in the 90s, unless Bill and Mike are wrong about the dates of the photos. Meaning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the first photo was 1966 and the latest photo could have been taken in 1989, it could be, DAMN, 23 years or less between the photos. This is believeable.

OK, here's the deal. Blackie is in the Tampa area. I have TR McIntosh, Freddy Yeats and a couple of other guys you probably don't know trying to locate him for me, on my dime. Now, I know how many people you know. Some of them have to be from the Tampa area. I challenge you to find Blackie before I do and I assume you can but it will have to be on YOUR dime too, LOL. Get after it.

Now that I look at #26 I think you're right and that it isn't Sid...

But I am almost positive that it isn't Gale either.

I was working at the O'Riley's in Denton when Gale moved here from Indiana and he hasn't changed in appearance hardly at all. He looks today almost exactly like he looked then and that was like 15 years ago.

Sorry, Bill. Jay and I communicated via email on this subject and guess we just for got about the thread. Blackie moved to Metropolis, IL with Buddy a while back. Blackie is now in a nursing home. Not to stay but just to have his foot taken care of. He is like Bugs, has diabetees and will not take care of himself. I talked to Buddy. There is no way to get the digital photo to Blackie. I would have to print it and send it to him. Buddy hasn't seen the photo but thinks it's not Blackie due to the dry hair look. Of the dozen or so other friends I sent the photo to, all but one thought it was Blackie. Thought I was going to get away with not admitting I was wrong here, just to Jay in an email but you just had to call me on it, didn't ya? OK, I too now believe Jay and others are right. I think it is Blackie also. There,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you guys happy????????????? LOL.

I really apprecaite your efforts on this one! I am going to caption those photos in the gallery as "New York Blackie" and that's that. If Blackie ever sees them and denies that the photos are of him, then I guess I'll have to re-caption them as a "New York Blackie look alike." :D Thanks again, Bill.

There was a period of time where Blackie opted to have a different look to his hair, i.e. the "dry look". These will now be called "his dry years". I know that I saw Blackie at least once (maybe in the 90's) when he had this new "do".

If that ain't Blackie, then I'm not Jay.

No, I thank you and Mike for taking the photos in the first place, Bill. I so look forward to receiving the DVD I won in the Bugs Raffle and thanks a ton for your contribution to help, Bugs. I will continue to try to get Blackie to view the photos. Buddy says he will be out of the Nursing home before long. Just have to find a place to email the photo.
