I am an APA member out of texas. Right now a level 4. Im here for help and just to have a good time. As far as help goes, the things I'm having most difficulty with as of now is long shots. I have been hitting them alot slower now and able to make them more than I was but I have a crappy leave most of the time when I do this. I guess this is where english comes in, I never use it in my game but have started learning it from a guy that knows what he is doing as far as placement. He is showing me how to use rails and english so I can maybe move up a skill and get over this obstacle. Any advice or links to maybe explain english and deflection and make it a little more understandable?

welcome! You'll get plenty of suggestions for english and deflection. If you go to Barnes and Noble, there are a dozen or so books related to pool, I like:
99 critical shots
Byrnes 350 shots
Idiots Guide To Pool

in no particular order. Good luck and welcome!!

When I started playing I was told by one of the best players around that pool is a simple game. Keep it simple.

His advice was to shoot and play position using center ball hits only and to avoid english. By this he meant that your cue tip should only be on the vertical line of the center of the CB. You can get a lot of position by using draw, follow, keeping an angle and using the whole pocket.

Set up a shot with the OB straight into the center pocket one diamond away from it. Put the CB on the diamond that is one diamond away form this (this is in the middle of the table). By using only draw, follow, stun, speed, and using the whole pocket you should be able to make the ball and leave the CB at any position on the table. Master this and your game will improve greatly. At your level stay away from english until you master the simple things. And when you can do this you will find that you won't really need it anyways.

You can also try doing this with a corner pocket.

Good Luck, practice, and be patient

Welcome

Use the search feature, it is your friend.....there is a ton of knowledge here, and very likely if you have a question, use search and you will get more info than you ever needed.....questions about what book to buy, do a search on books here and do some reading.....cues, again, use search.....

Also, there are a ton of us from Texas, so welcome from the Dallas area....

Welcome! There's lots of good people and a ton of valuable information on these forums.

My favorite books when newly learning were Jack Koehler's The Science of Pocket Billiards and Ray Martin's The 99 Critical Shots in Pool.

Long shots can be easier if you take time to aim well while you are standing. That's something I had a hell of a time getting myself to do and it is vital to playing good pool. You stand behind the cue ball and focus on aiming the shot and then you slowly lower your body into the shot line.. take your practice strokes, slowly draw back and STROKE the shot making sure to follow through.

It is strongly recommend that you take a lesson from a qualified instructor so you get started with the correct stance etc.

Have fun!!

welcome to the forum lots of knowledge to be soaked up here ..enjoy and most of all have fun

Welcome and enjoy as much as possible..but be warned... this could be addictive.

COULD BE???? Don't try to soften the blow on this guy. Just tell him straight up that his productivity at work is going to be cut in half, and he'll need a picture of his wife taped to the corner of his monitor if he wants to remember what she looks like.
