New Here? - Introduce Yourself

Hello from Staunton Virginia. I've been looking around on here for quite a while I'm glad to join the forum. I've been playing pool off and on for years since I was little kid now I'm 47 and still play on occasion.
Hey Grimace. Live in Richmond myself and really love Staunton; might try to retire there someday. Really curious to learn where you might play in the Staunton area? Thanks

Wondering the same...Winchester? Front Royal?

Maybe at home!

Im halfway between you two, fyi.

You use the room in Midlothian? I've been there many times, shame they have a mix of tables. Hope they have all diamonds in there by now?

I have a table at home and a couple sparring partners so play on it 98% of the time. Used to play a good bit at a since shuttered pool room in downtown Richmond. Shortly after it closed I got a nice Diamond at home. The Midlothian room is decent though a bit of a drive for me and can be difficult to get a table there often times with all the league action. They have 5 9 foot Diamonds or so I believe with maybe 10 Brunswick knock offs; they are perhaps not the greatest though are 9 footers at least.

I really like the room in Front Royal and impressed with Winchester having 3 halls in such a relatively small city. Now if Staunton gets a room in that sweet downtown I may hafta move!

Greenleaf's Pool Room at the corner of 6th and Franklin. Was there from 2014 to early 2020. Closed in part to COVID though was probably headed in that direction sans pandemic. Beautiful pool hall; most aesthetically pleasing pool room I've ever seen. Had a true retro old school vibe and super cool. The tables were far too close together though the design and decoration was second to none. Sad to see it close though that is far from uncommon in the pool world, in this country at least.

I never made it there but was e-familiar with it.

I spent a decent amount of time at triple triangle and playing field, also another place, side pockets or something like that?

I usually go to the moose lodge in Staunton they got 3 tables. they do have a pool hall here in Staunton. but I usually go out to Verona and play at the bar on the weekend they have 4 pool tables. I don't know if the pool hall up here in Staunton has a website or not they are called bricks. Bricks does have quite a few pool tables.

Hey guys. Same as the last guy, I've been lurking until I got my membership sorted.

I started playing at age 34 in 2011...APA. I absolutely LOVE the game and I wish I would have started when I was younger.

I watch a lot of matches on YouTube and I really want to become a better player. No more APA but I play BCA and just quit UPA league so I could have more time to play in tournaments.

Cheers!

Hey now, upstate ny'er outside Rochester on lake ontario

My dad got me started goofin' around here & there from when I was around 7, 'cause he brought me to the bar with him (those were the days, eh?) and it stuck

Growing up, I had multiple friends with tables, as well as full time access to the nearby bar table from the time I was 15ish...and very little else to do, so my pool buddies & I
prolly spent more time shooting, than anything else

Most of 'em shot quite well & since I was always the light timer...I had great motivation to gït gūd

My later teen yrs, I played at the bar from open to close, got to the point where I really couldn't miss, aand always walked away with pockets more full than when I arrived, as the drunk folks loved playin' the kid with a few $'s on the table

Did some years solid, running around the country, before I landed & succumbed to the boring life...but was in Ithaca NY where there was a decent place to play

I didn't, however get too many hours into that before kids & everything else made play time all but totally non existent over the next 20 however many yrs

Now that they're grown & things have slowed down, I'm missing it...aand my couple beloved cues, a '98 Pechauer & mid 70's Adam-Helmstetter, (if I have all my info right...it came to me with zero, other than it was won in a Long Island match a loong time ago) and they've remained embarrassingly, nearly untouched for the past 25 yrs, & are making me feel increasingly guilty for not enjoying them

Hi I am the realJustnum.

The main routine I will follow is to provide logistics and recruiting for billiard training in group exercises.
Try the wheel you start at A shoot miss or hit you move on and respot. Move on directly to the B shot.

Repeat the wheel motion until your coach says you have developed a proficiency off the rail at A and near the rail at B. If your cue control is weak it will be obvious and feedback provided.

The main purpose is to have a clear transition no time for reacting. All those emotions need to be placed in check, save them for your baby mama drama.

I justnum AI aware.

Hello everyone,
Found this site a month ago when I was looking for info on a table I was going to see. My Grandfather had a cheap plywood table in the basement that I learned to play on while visiting for the summers. Still remember the sound that table made! I played lots of local pool halls and bars and entered a few tournaments back in the late '80s and '90s. At some point during that time I was given a cue as a gift, nothing fancy and don't know the brand but I got used to playing with it and still have it. Like everyone else, seems like life got in the way and I haven't really played in 20 plus years. Living in a smaller community probably contributed to this as well. When I built my house a few years ago I decided to make room for a table. Long story short, found a Brunswick table on FB a few weeks ago and it turned out to be a Cold Crown I 8'. Assembled it myself and dusted off the old cue. Super excited to be playing again.

Welcome!!!
Start a new thread and post pics of your cue, maybe someone can identify it.

Hello, I'm just starting to play again after being away for 13 years. Don't have any real nice places to play locally (Laredo, Tx) compared to other places I've live at but still happy to be able to play again. I just recently bought an older Mezz cue that has some issues so I'll be asking for advice on how or where to get it fixed since I really like the cue but my OCD can't get over some of the "damage" on the shaft.

When I was six years old, my dad bought us a pool table.

To this day I have no idea why. Not. A. Clue.

None of his three boys played and none asked for a table. It just showed up one day. My guess is he found one on sale - he loved sales - and figured it would be a good pastime for us. Maybe he played as a kid or in the Navy. I dunno.

Whatever the case, I played a lot of pool the next 15 years. But no training whatsoever. Only pool I ever saw on TV was Minnesota Fats and Willie Mosconi. I only vaguely knew about Steve Mizerak, and that was because of his weight.

Sometimes my older brothers would bring their friend over and I’d hustle them for money (beer money once I was a teen). They figured they would easily beat the little snot-nosed kid. And when they didn’t, they wanted to keep playing - and losing!

I stopped playing regularly after graduating from college. We got rid of the old table and I moved out.

But I never stopped yearning.

Fast forward to 1998. When my wife and I looked to buy a house, I had to make a choice.

Buy the house with a good yard for a garden, but not enough space for a table. Or buy a house with a big basement and small, shady yard.

The house with the garden won out. I thought my dream of getting a pool table was dead. For good.

The dream never died, though.

For years we vacationed in the Outer Banks (NC) where most rental homes have tables. I’d get a house with a table every year and play some pool. The appetite only got whetted.

Finally I measured my basement. Just big enough to fit a 7-foot table if I got rid of everything. I’d have to use shorties for 5% of my shots, but I could live with that.

My wife resisted at first, but finally gave in. Kids were grown. Basement was rarely used.

In January 2022 I got a table. Finally!

First it was a cheap MDF table from Amazon that was surprisingly decent. Had to know if it was a burning desire or a passing fad.

A burning desire. Gave away the cheap table and got a used Olhausen 7-footer nine months later.

So here I am. I play at least an hour a weekday, 2-4 hours a day on weekends. I go to a local pool hall 3-4 times a month.

I’ve watched at least 300 hours of instruction videos in the past two years. DrDave, Tor Lowry, Sharivari, Niels Feijin, FXbilliards, DrCue, and so on.

Every day I practice drills and the like from all those teachers. Banking, kicking, centerball, stunning drawing, pattern play.

I’ve also taken to the pro sport. I now watch live pool more than any other sport except perhaps soccer. Another way to learn a lot.

My game has progressed rapidly.

As I mentioned on another thread, I became a really good and creative shotmaker as a kid. I’d just get on my table and try anything. My position play was basically non-existent, so I had to become a good shotmaker.

Now I am pairing those raw skills developed as a youngster with an ever-increasing knowledge of the fundamentals and the wisdom that comes from age.

Fortunately my muscle memory largely remained intact. And I am in very good shape at my age (58).

Now it looks like my wife and I will expand our basement. A 9-foot Diamond may be in reach.

Guess the dream never died after all.
