New Joss Cue & Conversation

I would order a custom cue built by Dan in a heart beat if I could get legally circumvent the new CA ivory ban.
He's been around a long time & one never stops learning so my bet is he knows more than most cue-makers.

You're just going to have to move.

I guess I could be wrong, but I don't think he does joints with the flat face 3/8 pin ivory that you like. It's been a long time since he's done those. But, I guess anything's possible.

All the best,

As far as I know he does actually.

When I last spoke to him about my cue I do believe he offered it as an option.

He does do ivory joints, and he does flat face, and he does radial pins, and 3/8 10. Recently I think.

Best is to ask him. Can't imagine any reason he could not do it.

Mine will be piloted ivory though.

I sure haven't seen one of these in a long time, with 3/8 pin. Most I've seen in ivory are piloted, with 5/16 by 14. But, as I said, anything's still possible. Anyhow, here's memory lane, 1976:

A modern recent Joss.....

But should we be surprised that the most common Joss joint is the piloted 5/16 14? The same as all the best leading makers preferred and still do?

I'm not judging anyone else, this is just a personal choice; I asked Dan NOT to use any ivory in my cue. He said that was no problem, but then added that he wanted me to know that he doesn't use Elephant Ivory. He said he only uses Mammoth Ivory. He gave a long explanation on how this is possible & how it works.

I don't know the CA law, but maybe this gives you some wiggle room?

Interesting. That has changed since i spoke to him. He definitely used it 3 years ago.

I am not concerned though.

Edit: On further reflection I could be remembering this wrong. He may have said mammoth ivory 3 years ago.

I wish the CA law allowed the use of mammoth ivory, or any other type, but it doesn't distinguish.
The law actually specifies the different types of ivory banned and it is all inclusive, i.e., zero exceptions.
If the cue has "any" ivory whatsoever, it cannot be built, nor sold, to anyone that resides in California.

Naturally, I have my fingers crossed the lawsuit challenging this new law is successful because my pool
cue budget still has funds to add more custom cues but my hands are tied & I do.hope this changes soon.

It's so easy to circumvent though.

It is rare for me to offer any recommendation. But Dan James is a person, company and philosophy that are genuine and to the core of perfection. I have a Nick Varner made by Joss I guess 30 years ago. I also have a handmade Joss about 2 years old. Ivory, ebony, turquoise. Both incredible playing cues. The handmade cue is a thing of beauty. Dan will not be around forever. I worry about this due to his mastering perfection in a cue. However, he has also taken the steps to share his cue making craftsmanship to insure the cue world continues to benefit. I have never met Dan. I have talked to him twice on the phone. But my gosh can he make a cue. I hope someday to meet Dan, I would be honored. He is what legends are made of.

Yep, radial joint pin, plastic joint, done by about a thousand or so cuemakers today. What I said was that I haven't seen the old 3/8 pin with flat face ivory joint by Joss in recent times. And I still haven't. You have to go back in time a bit.

I think you're right. He doesn't do those anymore. But he will make new shafts for those old pins. I've had a few done.

I might not get that new Joss Cue on Wednesday after all. I think I have appendicitis. Lower right abdominal pain for three days now. If its not cleared up by tomorrow I am heading to the ER. At least appendicitis is my diagnosis.

:lmao:

Dan says he makes all of his cues by hand.

Funny guy! Wonder who makes all his production imported cues....

I had appendicitis and had my appendix removed. I think if you have the pain for three days it's something else as in your appendix would have ruptured by then. Plus the pain in general is a bit much to deal with for days.

Whatever it is, get well.
