Hi Guys,

We have a new Chris Hightower lathe in our shop in the US, just wondering what kind of Automotive Oil is best for lubrication? We've been using 10W30 but just wondering if there are any special oil or brand for this lathe.

Regards,
Duc.

I use ATF on the ways

On all of my machinery that has bare, machined metal such as rails, cast saw tables and mill tables, I coat with Johnson's Paste wax. I do this every couple weeks. Prohibits rust, cuts down on friction and dust and debris doesn't collect like happens when oil or grease is used. I use plain old 30 wt. motor oil in my carriage and headstock.

Chris can speak for himself, but I remember him recomending WD-40 on his ALUMINUM rails. That's what I use...JER

3 in 1

Just my personal opinion but I prefer 3 in 1 Household oil. Lightweight, coats well, contains graphite and last pretty well without build-up.

lube job

I use way oil on both my Hightower lathe and my CNC mill. The way oil is heavy enough to stick where you put it and stay for a long time. Also seems to help with clean-up.

Have anyone every heards of Ways 90? Its suppose to be 3 times thicker that 10W30 and stay on the ways a lot longer. Anyone know where I may be able to get some?

I like to use SuperLube Dri-Film on Mine especially when turning shafts. The viscosity may not be as high as oils, but debri does'nt stick to It, and gunk up as bad, and make the carraige tighten up or want to bind in spots. I can spray the stuff on My ways when turning shafts, with the powerfeed running, and It just blows the dust right off the ways with no sticking. It says on the can that It's for industrial slides and a variety of other things, but on My crossslide I use different lubricants with a higher viscosity, more simular to what others have mentioned.

Thanks Pete, any ideas where you can get a ways 90 "Non-Detergent" Oil? I've check and found a way oil in an automotive store but can't remember if it's non-detergent.
