Hey, would like to take a second to introduce myself to the group. My name is Jim but I go by MULLY. 39 years old and have been playing pool for about as long as I can remember. My earliest memory is my dad putting me up on a chair in our basement so I could knock the balls around. I'm originally from the Cincinnati, Ohio area but relocated myself to Japan 16 years ago.
There may be some people here that know me from rec.sport.billiards from about 7 years ago. If so, I'm back! hehe!!
Cues: My first real cue was a plain Jane Meucci. I upgraded to a 4pt Meucci, then a Schon, then a Southwest and finally settled on Paul Mottey. My main playing cue is a Mottey with an ebony forearm, 6pts of snakewood with holly veneers and ivory diamonds in the long pts. I'll post a photo if anyone is interested.
I'm currently looking into having James White make a cue for me. We'll see how that goes.
My main game is 14.1 but I suck at it. Highest run is 42 balls. It's really sad because I am ranked in the SA class, that's the highest class for amateurs in Japan. My highest run in 9-ball is 7 racks. The biggest problem with 14.1 is that no one really plays it over here so I've never really had anyone to teach me the ins and outs of it. My straight pool game looks like 9-ball straight pool. I try to get my hands on as many videos of tournament matches as I can though to pick up tips. I really wish I had picked up on it when I was younger and living in America.
Don't play much one pocket but it does appeal to the safety playing side of my personality. When I started playing Gary Spaeth, R.I.P., taught me the value of playing safe. He told me that playing a good safety is just as important and twice as difficult as a regular shot.
Anyway, just wanted to say hey to the group and hope to be able to help any younger players lookg for advice and also hope to pick up some tips from those with more experience. I'm totally open to advice from anyone at any level though. I think when you get to a higher level of the game you forget some of the basics. Any advice on straight pool would be greatly appreciated.
See ya around!!
