New player level?

Pool? Never heard of it..

Today, for the first time in my short, 3 year pool playing life (before that I just played for fun), I ran an entire table. It was his break, the cue ball went off the table, nothing dropped...and I ran it. Balls were tied up, some were VERY thin cuts...and I still managed. After that game, I wasn't running the table, but was winning with a fair margin...Does this mean I've reached a new level? Or was I just dead stroking today?...I'd like to think all the hours I've been practicing paid off. Thoughts?

This is how it starts... It really yo-yo's until you put tons of time in. I ran my first rack in the first month that I played. The fun left at that moment cause I wanted to run every rack after that.

in the zone, caught a gear, dead punch, etc. you'll find it from time to time as an up and coming player then want to go hang yourself the next time you play when you're right back where you started. oh the natural cycle of pool.

Haha, really. One night you're stomping on everyone, the next, bangers make their bones on you and bragging about it for days to come.

The game is schizophrenic, it's a wonder the many of us love it so much... lol.

Sounds like you did. if you manage to keep it up then i'd say yeah you did reach a new level. what game were you playing?

We played 8 ball. I played the kitchen staff at the pool hall. They are ALL very good players, each spending at LEAST 2 hours before work to practice and play.

It wasn't just the 1 time run, I figured out (yesterday) that I needed to aim a different way and today...It paid off big time. Not running every table, but dropping many and playing safe when I knew I had to.

good going. but to get where you can run more you need to look past the ball you are getting position on next. you need to see where you have to be to get to the next one after that.
once you take the time to see, you will get better fast. good luck

Update this in a month and you tell us.

For me, dramatic increases in ability are usually preceded by a period when nothing works right. I get things figured out in my head, and my game goes to shit while I incorporate whatever new skill or concept I have aquired. This is followed by a period of above average play. I think this is common.

It's not necessarily a new level, but it's a milestone. Congrats.

Congratulations on running your first 8-ball rack. I think all the hours of practice is paying off.

It comes and goes with wild inconsistency at this point and expect yourself to be off way way more then on.

Good news is that you're breaking through, it's going to take a while but you're are going to start becoming more consistent as you stick with it. Eventually reaching the point where you can stroke at will

Congrats, definatly a milestone, now you just have to remember what you did....stay tuned for my new book coming out

"The 28 most important things to remember during your backstroke" --

not really but maybe one day.

Well, let's see if you can sustain it. I hope you are indeed at a new level. Don't be discouraged if you have a bad day in your next outing.

If I could make a suggestion it would be to believe in your own mind that you are now at that next level. It's amazing how powerful the mind is.

Best of luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I actually started with the 8 ball and went backwards. Once I had it all sorted out, that's when I started. I've been doing it that way for a long while now, just ended up getting bad position because I'd hit too hard or too soft.

As for some of the other comments of hitting a lull for a while, where nothing goes where I want...I've been in that lull for a few months.

I had to get back to my basics, even took out my "Complete Idiots Guide to Pool" book and one of my Byrnes books as well. Finally figured out on my own that I was lining up my shots once I was down on the ball (I always tell other people not to do it...and I was suddenly doing it myself. I played on a Diamond 9ft. in Madison Saturday night and was potting balls with fair consistency, that's why we decided to play again on Sunday, to see if I was right about what I'd been doing wrong for so long.

very cool... i remember the feeling, but cant say that i have had it ina while...

took a few years off, but getting back into the game is HARD...

we should meet up some time to shoot!

Congrats

Congrats on running your first game. I have noticed in my play that progress seams to come all of the sudden and then level off for awhile. there will still be inconsistencies, but generally I feel my play stays at that new level once I reach it. Hopefully the same goes for you.

Congrats on your first run out. One thing hopefully you do get out of it is that you do have the ability to run a rack, and therefore can run another one. The better you get at pool your confidence will go up. The more your confidence goes up, the better you will shoot! They definitely go hand in hand. If you don't think you are going to run out guess what...you probably aren't. Good luck on future runouts!
