New pool room Help and ideas

Lots of great ideas!!!!

All great ideas...thanks everyone. My wife and I stayed up till 3am talking about everything that WE would like see happen with this room. I really do appreciate everyone?s input. This is in no way a 100% for sure thing, but after talking to my friends that will be helping out it is sure looking that way. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

1. We decided there would be no alcohol. At least for the time being, just to see how it will work.

2. No bands for the time being. We may try that at a later date

3. I decided that we would just go with all Diamonds. I prefer them just because I am freaky weird and I like things to match. I have talked to my friend; he said he would purchase all the tables, so there will be no overhead on the tables. We will also have 6 Diamond quarter tables so you don?t have to get on the ?time? tables. If this does not seem to be working out, we can always convert them to hourly tables. I am pretty set on this though?.I will charge 5.00/hr for hourly tables. 1st hr will be full price, then after 1st hr, it will be paid in ? intervals. Fri and Sat nights from 7 till close will be 6.00/hr

4. Video games will be in a separate room that can be easily monitored. That room will have LCD TV's, and its own sound system that we can control from behind counter.

5. I work at he Veterans Administration during the daytime, and my wife is a schoolteacher...So she will be the one running it during the daytime, then after I get off work, I will take over. I also have 2 very dependable and very well liked nephews and they can help run it also in the early evenings. We are looking at opening around 10am and closing around 10-11pm Mon-Thurs, 10-12pm Fri-Sat (will play that by ear).

6. Food?prices for a good burger basket (cheeseburger, fries, drink) is approx 5.50 here in the surrounding area. That also includes McDonalds and Burger King. I will be hand making the patties out of 80/20 beef and I have figured if I charge 6.50 for a burger basket, I will be making a profit. When I was in the Army, my last 2 duty stations I won the Chili cook off so I will make Chili 1 day a week. We will also have some sort of Crock Pot stew or whatever does better for each day of the week. This is to draw in local business men/women on their lunch. There are 2 manufacturing facilities within 1/2mile from where the poolroom will be. There are also a lot of businesses very close by also. I really don?t think the food will be an issue or the prices because we want you to have the feeling like you just had a home cooked meal, not a fast food type of meal.

We will also (my wife decided this) have gourmet coffee/espresso.

The dining area will be separate from pool tables and video game area and will have its own TV?s as well.

6. My cousin and his wife have a local business that makes the vinyl stickers on the backs of windows and also embroider and print custom shirts. They will make us some shirts for advertisement and as gifts to give away. They will also have a small display case that you can purchase shirts, hats, and stickers, they can put logos on coffee mugs, mouse pads, whatever you want. Shirts and hats will be given out for advertisement and as perks throughout the week.

7. Cues?I will not go crazy on this, but will carry 5-10 Schon cues, Meucci, McDermott, Joss. I will also carry the cheaper cues for beginners to buy. I will also buy a few custom cues?. probably from reputable sellers on here and straight from the cue maker themselves. I will also think would be a great idea is to contact some cue makers here on the forum and purchase a couple cues from them to sell here to ad some diversity. Maybe that will open up a new avenue for them. There is also a guy here locally that buys broken bar cues and he makes them into a 2 piece cue that play and look pretty good?. he sells them for 100.00. So I will also carry a few of them as well.

This is looking more and more like it will turn into a reality and from my vision, it looks like it will be an affordable place to come play some pool, and eat some good food and just have fun.

On a side note?I have my South West spot coming up soon, I have even considered raffling it off after the place gets good and going. I am not sure how it will work if I do it on here also, I will just have to check if I can.

Just trying to get some good solid ideas to make them work for us and be a positive light for the pool community.

As I said, I can help you with the Diamond tables, I designed a key bypass system in the coin-op's which simply with the turn of a key, you can charge by the hour on the same tables:cool: I also sell ovens for bars and pool halls that require no oil, or hood system, you can cook anything from french fries to steak in them, burgers...about 120 an hour...

Thanks Glen.. I will keep your info if needed.

6$ an hour in Muskogee is too high.It should not be more than $3.25.If beer is served it should not be more than $ 1.75 for Budweiser. water bottle $ 1.00.
Folks, Muskogee is not San Francisco.

Well, Tulsa (Magoos) charges 6.00/hr and there is usually a waiting list to get on a table...I realize this isnt Tulsa, but if you have a good place to go, people will spend 6.00/hr to play pool...simply because there is nowhere to go but to drive 50 miles to Tulsa....and younger kids and familys dont want to do that.

There will be no alcohol served.

Again, my prices arent set in stone..but 3.25/hr is not even in a ballpark as to where prices should be...not with the quality of place we will be providing....I was honestly thinking 4-5.00/hr...but im not 2 sure about them prices....it is just something we will have to work on..we hardly have any overhead because I own the building, my friend will buy all the tables..me, my wife and nephews and a cpl close friends will run the place..I have talked to 1 Pro pool player...he sounds very interested in being the house pro...I will provide him one of my rent houses and I will pay him for being the House Pro.. Still..this is just the groundwork....still alot of decisions to be made before anything is set in stone.

YES!!!.....gourmet coffee/espresso. Can you say... CAPPUCCINO!
YOU have a GOOD wife!:grin-angelic:

No alcohol... I love it. Let us know when you open up. Road Trip!

12a.m. seems a little early for pool payers...?

Good luck to you with your venture.

12am would be to just start off...if I see there is a need to stay open later....I would definately stay open later. The time would not be an issue. Muskogee is still a somewhat sleepy town and I would just have to see what hours the community would support.

@ 6 bucks an hour you would need 10 tables going for 8 hours straight to make as much as your average plumber :p

Yea, I realize that, But...Joe the Plumber is not actually a licensed plumber:rolleyes:
I think the quality of tables we will be providing, quality of food...the atmosphere...I dont see where it can go wrong. This town is in dire need of something like this instead of people going all the way to Tulsa..

I called up 30 people that shoot in my local ACS pool league..I told them about my spot becoming available for my South West cue and that after the pool room gets going..(IF) would they think it was a good idea to buy tickets for a chance on the drawing for the cue. Well, a couple of them said they never heard of a South West:rolleyes: but the majority said they would definately buy tickets. I think this would be a great promotion for opening a new pool room. Hate to give up my cue, but, its all for the greater good is how I see it.

I think we have some great ideas so far. I am just going to start asking around if people think it would be a good idea so I can get a feel as to if I should even attempt something like this. I personally think it will work.

Well sorry to hear you cant afford 7.50 for a burger, fries and a drink..and then 6.00 an hr for pool.....I do know that Georgia Pacific is hiring right now for production workers...They start out at 16.25/hr....and in 1 yr you would be at 21.00/hr...I have a cpl cousins who work there and they are making about 26/hr.......Or, try OG&E..they start at 16/hr and top out about 31/hr...lots of jobs around here that pay well...and cost of living is cheap here compared to Dallas and other big cities..so less money can take you farther here....heck...I need a handyman to take care of my rent houses...thats a 6 day a week job....any takers..lol

I am trying to help you develop realistic expectation for your business. If u can`t handle the responses you should NOT have asked for advises on a public form.

I understand that and I appreciate your help..but that is what the prices are here..I have to charge to make somewhat of a profit..I will not charge to where I am suffering a loss... Rates would be 6.00/hr..I probably could go as low as 5.00/hr..just something I have to think about...food prices are pretty much set...wouldnt really be making a profit on them honestly..I guess I am not getting why you are comparing Muskogee to San Fran....I have no clue as to hwo much pool cost there....but the prices I will haev will be equal to, or somewhat cheaper than everyone else...I will not have to charge a premium since all tables and the building is own by me or my friend. SO dont take it I dont appreciate your opinions..I do...I guess I just may not be following you...

Keep the band, serve alcohol, and get rid of most of the tables. You now have a bar.

Get rid of the band, keep the tables, you now have a poolroom.

I've seen a band in a poolrooom one time. The room didn't last long at all.
I agree with Neil's sentiments here. A band I find incompatible with pool, either the pool will ruin the music or the music will ruin the pool or both. The place I'm forced to play in is what I heard one person refer to as a "nightclub with pool tables". I think that is an apt description, are you opening a nightclub or a pool room.
Maybe I'm an old crumudgeon, but if I could blow up the jukebox in the place I go and tear down the speakers I would in a minute.
Good luck with your endeavor.

Yea, I hear ya on the band..thats a NO GO...as for music...i disagree...I think a jukebox would add to the place..I was thinking satelite radio also....but I dont think for the crown nowadays, they need some music..cause they get 2 board 2 easily...I have played in a old pool hall in Columbus Ga when i started learning to play pool back in 1991 and they had no music...it was ok for me..because I was serious and wanted to concentrate..even if they had music...i would have blocked it out....so a jukebox in my pool room..yes...band no thanks for your input
