I just thought up a practice game for 2 people to play. It's focus is on position play. It's called Red Eye.
The game is 9 ball and it's race to 25 points. The game is centered around a circular piece of red cloth that is 12 inches in diameter. In the center of the cloth is a smaller black circle, 5 inches in diameter. The inner circle is worth 3 points if you land on it and the big circle is 1 point.
Here's how you play. The breaker puts the circle dead center in the middle of the table and breaks. If he makes a ball he continues his run and gets 1 point for each ball he pockets on the break as well as a point if he parks the cue on the circle. If he doesn't make a ball but parks his cue on the circle he continues his run and gets a point. Then he places the circle where he wants to get position for his next ball. If he misses the circle on that next shot he loses his turn no matter if he pockets the object ball. You have to make the shot and land on the circle to get a point and continue your run. It's all about position on the next shot. It has to be realistic position though, no long shots just because it will be easier landing on the circle.
The position you have to get after pocketing the nine ball is dead center just like on the break. Then re-rack the balls and continue your run.
A legitimate safety is worth 1 point and a kick out of a safety is worth 1 point.
First person to 25 points wins.
How good will your position be after playing this game? Damn good!!!
