Very good question! When Predator first released the 314 shaft, they knew it would play better with a much smaller ferrule than standard, but it is very difficult to get players to buy into a new design/invention (like the 314 was at the time) especially if the ferrule was much shorter than normal.
IOW, it was easier for Predator to gain acceptance with a 1 inch standard ferrule on the 314 initially (which it did have) and then switch to a shorter ferrule (which they did) and then go to an even shorter ferrule (which they will be (314 2))[/QUOTE]

I believe Predator chose the number 314 because of the irrational number "pie" which equals 3.1415927....This number has a lot to do with the properties of a circle. And it also emphasises their "pie" lamination technology.
But the square of this number "pie", or (3.1415927..) 2 simply does not mean anything in math. Since pie is an irrational number, which means it is a number with an infinite decimal places, the square of it is really just another irrational number, which does not have anything to do with a circle or "pie" lamination for that matter. It is just another number that can never be expressed accuratly in decimals.
I can see the meaning of this logo if they now have double the number of laminations as before, hence the "pie" squared...but is it the case?
On a side note, Predator really emphasises on the accuracy of its product, but the ironic part of the number "pie" or 3.1415927... is that you can never express this number accuratey in decimals.
To someone who knows maths, the number "pie" in decimal forms is not a number you would use when you want accurancy. Especially if you use 314, which is taking only 3 siginificant figures, you are really expressing a compromised version of a number which cannot be accurately expressed in decimals to begin with.
Now, Predator is coming out with a shaft labelled "pie" squared, which in a mathematical sense, is multiplying a number they can never expressed accuratly in decimals with the same number, is it making it twice more inaccurate in a marketing sense?
I know they are going to have a new ferrule on this new shaft, after all these years of fixing broken, melt, and scratched 314 ferrules, the cue repairmen should be very happy about that.
On the other hand, the user of the existing 314 might have problem selling their 314.
Will there be any upgrade avaliable?
Thank you.
Richard
I just do not agree with the way the new logo was designed, I also think they can improve on their marketing.

MacGyver said:rofl this is the craziest thing i've heard...
you want them to market on A MATHEMATICAL CONCEPT that barely anyone who is buying the shafts actually cares about!?!?!
MacGyver said:I'm a huge huge geek and have plenty of math under my belt, that isnt the point...
The difference is holding someone's marketing, which was not trying to be mathematically correct at all, to a mathematical judgment.
It would be one thing if the shaft was called " pi = 3.14159..."
However its not... its simply named "314".
Do you go around to those new Ford Fusion cars exclaiming that they arent run on nuclear energy or that the Red Bull energy drink is not red nor contains Bull juices???
I'm just saying that you are taking a name and its mathematical properties to the extreme if you are going to critizice someone's marketing, which again you still dont make sense.
If you agree its just the nerd in you, then why is it a bad marketing move in your opinion? Marketing matters to the masses not to math nerds, even if you dont agree with the name you should still be able to agree its good marketing...
Fair enough and i'm going to let it drop I understand it may have been a slight misunderstanding I just dont agree that its bad marketing just because of some math flaws that dont even factor into the marketing...

ps another thing that also ticked me off and got me to respond was your "outing" of a member here and then acting like it was a good move.
Honestly, not everyone has a boss that likes employees running their mouths on internet forums, and if Pillage6 chose to remain anonymous then you should respect that... outing him just closes off his freedom to speak on this forum as now people might draw conclusions that he speaks for pred, or worse he might be stopped from chatting here under that nick from his bosses...
Seriously, ALL over the place are people who post anonymously so they can talk about info without interefering with their job, and I think by outing you've interfered with that when it shouldnt have been done....
It would be one thing if pillage6 was hosting some mass conspiracy or something, but if he was just a pred employee that wanted to be able to post on an internet message board in peace without being hounded by people about pred stuff or worse his boss censoring him, then thats another story...
I really dont know his reasons or whatever, but its in bad form to publically out someone like that without at least PM'ing them discussing it....
then right after you do that, come here and badmouth preds marketing on some backwards reason... just doesnt sound right imho.
