New: Pro Series (Billiard Glasses By Curran Opticians)

I bought a pair of Curran glasses about a year ago after reading Jerry Forsyth's very positive review (see AZB front page). My eyes are in bad shape and, unfortunately, a lot of places I play have less than ideal lighting. My reg glasses weren't cutting it.

Dealing with Bill Curran was a pleasure. The turnaround time was fast (under 2 wks) and the quality of their glasses are terrific.

I know you can find pool glasses cheaper, I've seen them for as low as $39 on ebay but it's like most purchases in life, you get what you pay for.

The personalized service Bill provided was worth what I paid for the glasses all by itself. That they have their own lab on site and use the best avail materials (100% titanium frame on mine, trivex lenses, etc) adds a lot to the value, imo.

The Curran glasses are customized to you, and not just the script. The lens placements are made to your specs based on the photo of your face that you send in with your measurements. Pretty sure the other places are one size fits all. There's other things like the A/R coating, the curve of the glass, and their knowledge of just where to place the prescription within the lenses that I think gives them an edge.

These glasses work great and are easily worth the few hundred bucks I paid.

Also, I don't think they were offering any single pair of pool glasses for $800. Pretty sure they are in the $300 - $400 range.

best,
brian kc

Thanks for posting.

Traditional glasses aren't suitable for billiards because when a player is looking down their cue stick and eyeing up their shot, they are no longer looking through their glasses but over them.

We increase the vertical dimension of our (billiard) glasses so they go above your eyebrow line.. Now, when you take a shot your eyes are looking though the lenses and not over them. Also, we move tho optical centers toward the top of the lenses, so when you are pointing your nose downwards and aiming, you are looking thru the sweet-spot of the lenses, which gives sharper vision.

Hi Bill, I mentioned it before in an earlier post but would like to hear your thoughts on Trivex material? Do you offer your glasses with Trivex and what are your thoughts on it for pool glasses?

My Bill Curran pool glasses-- bought two years ago with a $100 early bird discount.. I like the black pinstripe. (Bill told me that the glasses are sitting too high.) Sorry about the large picture. I will be 71 years old this month. I had an old school eye doctor spend forty minutes giving me the best pool table refraction I've had in over thirty years. Looking directly through the "sweet spot" works for me. One of my pool playing buddies tried to smash the polycrystalline lens with his hammer. The hammer cracked instead.

First I need a new Rx. They might be progressive as that's what I'm using now. Also have a set with a small reading lens in the lower inside corners. I might contact you.I did wait too long as I'm going South in 2 weeks....had all Summer but other things came up. Good luck with your eyewear.

Thank you for showing interest in our billiard glasses. Feel free to contact me after your trip. We modify the Rx when a customer has a visual correction for both near and far. We modify the Rx so your range will be from 3-10 feet. We like to have an up-to-date version, so let us know when you get a new Rx.

If you prefer bi-focals or progressives so you can see your score card, then we can do that too.

We use both Trivex and Polycarbonate depending on the Rx, size and curvature of the lens that we need to use.

To answer your question, we recommend both Trivex and Polycarbonate for billiards. We do not recommend CR-39 as a lens material.

Ours are better!

We include a case, FREE 2 year protection plan, 100% customer satisfaction, & more!!

Bill,

That looks like a general "compare us" list, but you are presenting it as an answer to someone posting the reference to http://billiard-eyeglasses.com/ . Some of the things on your list are clearly not applicable (for example, this competitor does offer anti-glare coating, ultra thin lenses, progressives, etc. (all at an upcharge). And they must also put the optical centre at the top - I assume based on the website. So if you want to explain why yours are better, I think you need to tailor it to this specific billiard centred eyeglass provider. I'm not asking you to criticize - rather just "here is what we offer compared to them".

After looking at both websites its clear to me that Bill Curan is offering a better product. Yes the Canadian website is cheaper and they look cheaper.
Bills website has 8 models, varying shapes, lens materials, frameless options, titanium frames, carbon etc. I have no idea why Bill needs to answer further questions. The respective websites both speak for themselves.
Bill also has photos of himself at the expos and appears to be working hard to be a part of our sport and pool community.
I do not know Bill Curran, never met the man. I do however plan to order a pair of Curran prescription glasses after carefully studying both websites. I didn't spend 30 years perfecting my game just to cheap out on my vision.

I fully agree that I don't believe in cheaping out, but not everyone can afford a higher price and/or would have to make hard choices about what to spend their money on.

Bill is the one who responded to a post about a competitor and said his are better. If he wants to do that, I think he owes it to us to compare his glasses to what is actually offered by the competition - otherwise his post is misleading (even if not intentionally).

I have respect for other businesses out there, so I will never bash a business by name, especially online.

We've received feedback from customers that had bad experiences with other places before purchasing a pair of billiard glasses from us. I won't name any specifics, or stories, but you can read reviews on our Google+, and reviews on AZbilliard, and other social media pages from our satisfied billiard customers.

Below is an article that talks about how we stand out from other places from a AZmember Co-Founder.

Keynotes about us from the article: Wonderful Customer Service, Photos for Measurements (extremely important whether it is for billiards or everyday use), and Free Two Year Protection Plan, Custom Designed Shape and Size per Individual, and More. These keynotes were not mentioned about other places in the article and I will leave it at that.

I bought my pool glasses from Curran after looking at every option out there and I feel I got the best value. Lowest price? No. But best value, yes. It is so nice to be able to see the sharp edge of the balls now instead of a gentle blurred edge.

Dr. Curran was also great to work with, made the whole process very easy and I never had to leave my chair to order and make sure the fit was perfect.

Crizal is very expensive

Everyone should price a pair of glasses with Crizal lenses locally before jumping on this guy. I priced a pair years ago and almost gagged. Super expensive, but if the ads are accurate, very nice vision improvement.

Dr. Curran, I have goofy eyesight. I have a very strong ( +7 / -7) prism, virtually no correction for left eye, moderate correction for right eye. No other corrections for astigmatism, etc. Due to the prism and the size of the lenses, would it be practical or even possible to make these lenses?

Hi Johnny,
I'm sorry to say that we wouldn't be able to fabricate a pair of our billiard glasses with your Rx and prism. Thank you for asking!

I think some take for granted he is. I had a dental lab. Made orthodontic appliances for dental offices. People would call me Dr. My mother would tell people i am almost a doctor :D
